Springtime in San Diego can Only Mean one Thing—Goodguys Del Mar!
April 1-3, 2011, brought the Goodguys to Del Mar, California, for the 11th annual Del Mar Nationals. When I received the Goodguys’ show schedule in the mail, I marked my calendar for the Del Mar show so that I wouldn’t accidentally book anything else. I’d guess by the number of cars in attendance that a lot of people did the same thing I did.
Personally, the Del Mar show is my favorite Goodguys event for a lot of reasons. First is the weather, granted it never gets too hot right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, but for some reason the month of April is extra perfect. Second, the fairground itself, the City of San Diego makes sure that the fairground is a picturesque background for any event—even a fair—go figure. Third, the proximity of the fairground to both Interstate 5 and Pacific Coast Highway is ideal. It is so close, in fact, that the grounds can easily be seen from either location. Some of the other reasons include the fact that the Del Mar Fairground is pretty close to my favorite Mexican food restaurant on the planet, and you can take the coast route in your hot rod to get there.
Then there are the cars. People come from all over the country, and even as far as Canada, to attend the Del Mar Nationals—that is a heck of a weekend road trip!
We suggest you log on to the Goodguys website at Good-guys.com (http://www NULL.Good-guys NULL.com) to check out the entire schedule of events for 2011, and make plans to be at the Del Mar Nationals in 2012. We know that we’ll be there!
- A tradition at one of the Southern California events is to get all of the magazine editors together and put them on the autocross course. This year’s winner, no surprise, was “Fast” Mary Pozzi, who is lightning quick behind the wheel.
- This stunning blue ’67 Chevy II sits down just right on top of those Torque Thrust rollers and is Gil Caton’s pride and joy.
- This ‘67 Fairlane not only looked like it was ready for the stoplight-to-stoplight races, with a big-inch Windsor motor backed by an AOD tranny, it was ready to run.
- This classic Corvette was just one of the gems in the swap meet area. For some reason the swap meet section at Del Mar is always a good one if you’re looking for projects.
- Ron Corradini is no stranger to going fast, and his ‘69 Camaro looks like it is going 200 mph when it is sitting still.
- A really good example of how a mild custom ‘70 Nova SS is done is this green one owned by Bill Chamberlin from El Cajon, CA.
- Ironworks Speed & Kustom had its new 1967-72 Chevelle/A Body direct fit chassis that features C6 Corvette front suspension and a fabricated 9-inch out back.
- Local enthusiast Evan McManus brought his really clean ‘70 Camaro for everyone to check out.
- Kurt Anderson brought out this fine-looking Camaro from La Mesa, CA.
- It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to paint your ‘63 Plymouth Fury magenta. Ben Giangulio must have it in spades.
- Eric Wynia’s ‘66 Chevelle was one of the cleanest muscle cars on the entire fairground and features air ride suspension, smoothed bumpers and a set of 18-inch Billet Specialties wheels.
- This completely restored ‘70 Nova SS has the stock L78 396-ci big-block and is owned by George Sepulveda. He came all the way down from Norco, CA, to enjoy the weekend by the beach.
