Every project, whether automotive or home improvement, is only as good as the foundation on which it is built. Some perfect examples are the 40-plus-year-old projects that grace the pages of this magazine every issue. Most of the muscle cars that we love to read about were at one time worn out shells of their former Detroit glory, in dire need of restoration.
So how do you go about rescuing your investment from the ravages of time and the elements? What products do you need, and what steps can be taken at home while keeping the green police at bay? The answer to all of these questions can be found simply by using KBS Coatings products. The company’s systems are easy to use and grouped together in kits according to the current restoration stage of your project.
All of KBS Coatings products were founded on the principles of high quality, ease of use environmental soundness that combat the effects of rust and corrosion. These items were originally formulated for the automotive restoration market; however, KBS products are used worldwide in numerous protective coatings applications, including many industrial and military uses.
For this project, we are going to focus on the frame of a well used ’64 Chevelle, using KBS’s three-step system. We’ll start by using the cleaning/degreasing power of Aqua Kleen, which is a concentrated, waterbased, biodegradable formula used to clean dirt, grease and road-grime from your vehicle without the use of flammable solvents or harmful chemicals. The solution can be applied using a pressure washer or a squirt bottle, without obnoxious fumes or harmful residues.
Next, we move on to Rust Blast to neutralize the rust. Applied using a squirt bottle or even brushed on, Rust Blast keeps the area wet for 20-30 minutes depending on the severity of rust on the affected surface. Rust Blast will gently etch the surface, leaving a zinc phosphate coating for future rust prevention and ensuring a strong bond with any paint.
Finally, we’ll apply Rust Seal, a paint that’s ready to use right from the can that can be sprayed, brushed or even rolled on to lock out corrosive elements. It features a high surface tolerance for many types of applications. Apply directly over treated rust. It won’t crack or peel and can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees F.
We chose the gloss black formula, however, Rust Seal is available in eight different colors and various sheens that complement any project. They are lead-free and VOC compliant. Best of all, this product “self-levels,” to achieve a finish that is “baked on.” You won’t have anymore leftover brush stokes with this stuff. It looks like it was sprayed on without the mess. All of the products are sold either in kits or by themselves as standalone products, and all are available in convenient gallons sizes.
