About me and my passion for cars
I came of age in the late 60s and all my friends were driving 55-56-57 Chevy's and such. My best friend had a 56 Nomad that we use to cruiz Van Nuys Blvd in. We use to also hang at the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank. Another friend had a 55 Olds that after high school he sold to a old time comic name Doodles Weaver. My mom lived in the "Valley" and my dad lived in Whittier and I spent a lot time also cruising Whittier Blvd with another friend in his 57 Chevy that was all jacked-up with a chrome straight axel front end. Sometimes I also wonder what happened to all the custom vans that were around in the late 60s and 70s? They seem all but totally forgotten.
My first car
1968 Dodge Charger. I joined the Army when I was 17 and never really had a car of my own till then. I always drove my parents cars. My mom had a 66 Chevelle two door that was stock and super clean so it wasn't so bad. I bought the 68 Charger in '73 when I came home on a 30 day Army leave from Germany for a $1000 and on the very last day of my leave an older guy lost control of his car on the freeway and hit me and the car was a total. His Insurance Company gave me $1351 dollars for it. Sure I made a few bucks but would rather still have the car. When I first read this question I thought it said "Remember your first?". Gosh I was already 4 lines into it when I realized they were talking about your first car. I started to go into when I was 16 and Jamie Johnson's parent's were out of town and I went over on a Saturday night...Um, nevermind.
Car I wish I still had
1957 Chevy Nomad
My dream car
1968 Dodge Charger with a 426 Hemi.
When I got out of the Army in '75 I was driving through Whittier California where I lived at the time and there was a small used car lot that sold transportation cars and there sat a '68 Dodge Charger same color as the one I had. I stopped and looked and the guy had me drive it around the block and it was smoking bad and smelled like it might be burning oil. When I got back to the lot I opened the hood and Damn-me if it didn't have a factory 426 Hemi in it. It would have needed to be gone through but still what a find! The guy wanted $600 dollars for it and that day it might as well been $6000 or $60,000 I didn't have any money. I've often been reminded of that car and think what it would be worth today.
