Family is the one constant in your life that you can always count on. If you are blessed enough to have a good one, then chances are they will always be around to back you up in good times and in bad. Roger Hogan of Farmington, Missouri, and his loving wife Carolyn have spent the past several years working and raising a family, and now their once youngsters are raising families of their own—funny how that happens. As a pastor, Roger spends a lot of his time spreading the word of the Lord, and with a dynamite family in his corner, enjoys some great company to share his interests with. One of those interests is classic pickups, and Roger has poured the last nine years and several greenbacks into the red and black two–tone ’55 F-100 radiating off these pages. In fact when we met Roger and his family at the 2010 F-100 Super Nationals in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, his kids commented several times about when packages of chrome-plated parts and truck gear arrived at the front door. In fact, when the truck was purchased for a mere $500 more than 10 years ago, his son Lance was so intrigued with the idea of a classic truck project that he jumped in with his dad and the two built it together. When Lance was ready for an F-100 of his own, well, he followed in hid dad’s footsteps with another ’55, and dad helped swing some wrenches. We have reached that time of year again when the staff of Street Trucks reviews the past year of magazine issues in an attempt to choose 10 trucks for our Top 10 Trucks of the Year competition. Looking deep into every contender we consider everything from paint and body modifications, chassis and suspension set-up, stance and detail, interior and audio treatments, fit and finish and innovation and ingenuity. Many of the trucks that made the cut this year not only had all the best custom ingredients, but were finished with a unique style or innovative custom direction that inspired and launched new trends in the scene and industry. We proudly present to you the Top 10 Trucks of 2010.
The planning stages for Brass Tacks have been completed thanks to the talent of Carter Hickman Designs. The K5 Blazer will be transformed from a 4WD mudslinger into a slick roadster that’s flat on the ground with street rod and salt flat-inspired styling. We found the Blazer for a mere $200 after a few weeks of searching. While we could have spent more dough finding a rarer 2WD truck, most that we did find had suspicious bodywork or had been repainted. Ours 4WD was a little dinged up, but the original paint was intact, so we knew what we were working with. However, the 4WD setup would no longer work for bringing the K5 closer to Mother Earth. Back in the early days of hot rodding enthusiasts put together their rocket of choice within the confines of a two-car garage, or they wrenched out in the open, right in the driveway. Making your performance dreams come true was a matter of pulling together your buddies, sharpening your skills, and just going for it. No fancy tools, no unlimited budget and no fully equipped shop—just a bucket-load of determination and a vision. Some of the coolest hot rods around today were built at home in the garage with the owner spinning the wrenches. Clayton Lashley of Newalla, Oklahoma, is a diehard hot rodder who has held the titles to a ’57 Ford two-door wagon, a ’34 Plymouth coupe and a ’37 Ford coupe. When it came time for Clayton to build a new project he wanted “a hot rod with a bed” so he located a ’53 F-100 slant cab, and friends Dave Griner, Dustin Lashley (son), Doug Boowning, Jon Barrett and Roy England spun wrenches in the evenings and on weekends with Clayton to complete his truck. The neat part about this build is the grassroots nature of the project, which used a ton of OEM parts borrowed from different vehicles, and the fact that Clayton and his friends did all of the work short of the interior. Nothing beats the sound of a raspy power plant radiating through the pipes as a set of big billets spins in the fenders and your favorite jams pound through an arsenal of precision-tuned audio gear. Of course, the experience of driving our custom trucks is heightened when there are a few extra ponies under the hood to unleash. Andrew Weaver of Snyder, Texas, is a hot rod and horsepower junkie at heart, and just so happens to have a predilection for late model trucks and SUVs that join retro influences with modern style.
