Performance and Luxury Fill This Custom Silverado
Let’s face it, we cannot leave any stock truck alone. It just doesn’t happen—it’s in our blood. The passion to personalize, customize and stand out from the rest is why we do what we do. The creativity, passion and fun make all of the work worthwhile. Since my current daily driver had actually become a show truck, I went in search of a new truck to serve as my workhorse. My truck, Flashback, was having tons of work done to it, including a custom interior and full custom paint.
The 1999-2006 body style Silverado trucks were being replaced by the redesigned new model, and I could affordably get a new 2007 Classic. It would be my first new vehicle, and after dumping a few thousand dollars into used vehicles to fix and repair parts, a new truck with warranty sounded great. Of course, that warranty would soon be voided as the custom snowball effect happened—it always does.
At first, my goal was to enjoy it stock, but the first time I accidently tried to unlock someone else’s crew cab in a parking lot, I knew I had to do something to set it apart with at least a few billet items. I added a mild stereo as a creature comfort, and soon an air intake and exhaust system from Bassani followed for added power.
I was getting sick of staring at the stock exterior so I installed a McGaughys Suspension 2/5 drop kit with rear helper ‘bags and a set of 22-inch wheels to add style and a lowered stance. I was content with this for a while; it was custom, it was cool, and it was simple.
After talking with Brian Zacuto over at Magnuson Products, I set a date to install one of the company’s new TVS supercharger units under the hood, much to the delight of my right foot.
Fast-forward a bit and I decided to go ahead and fully build the truck for the SEMA show after a neighbor swiped the side of the bed. It would need to be fixed, so I might as well go all out and repaint the crew cab with custom graphics, right? Makes sense to me! From there, the build grew with the goal of debuting at the SEMA show to represent all of the sponsors involved with the build.
The goal was to keep it a highly functioning daily driver with plenty of custom tricks and unique elements to take it to the next level. Finding a style or a theme is very important when setting out to build a custom truck. I kept seeing the monochromatic and slick VIP and European cars, including BMW and Lexus, sporting matte-finish, multi-piece wheels, and I decided that the theme of the build would be a blend of luxury and performance, but for a fraction of the price.
I voided the suspension warranty first by installing a McGaughys 2/5 drop kit consisting of a drop spindle up front and flip kit with Firestone helper ‘bags out back. I had a set of tri-piston SSBC brakes installed along with a rear-disc brake conversion at GOEZ Customs in Anaheim, California. Once the truck was lowered, Custom Truck Shop bolted up a set of 24 x 9.5-inch V31 Allusion wheels in semi-gloss black with Falken S/TZ04 295/35R24 tires to achieve an aggressive performance look. Putting some bite to the bark of the performance styling is a Magnuson Products TVS supercharger over the 5.3L engine. A Snow Performance water/meth injection kit was also added to allow the Magnuson supercharger to put out 9.7 psi of boost and make 400 hp to the rear wheels.
Keeping with the plan for a fully functioning, reliable daily driver, none of the door handles were shaved. But stock was not an option, so the crew cab was delivered to L&G Enterprises so that the crew there could fix the damage and begin the exterior transformation. Starting with the front end, they pulled off the grille shell and painted it before it was fit with a Grillcraft MX Series mesh insert. A Street Scene EQ Gen 1 bumper cover from Stylin’ Trucks was installed, as well. The headlights had been outfitted with ElectroSport HID lights before they were lightly smoked to complete the monochromatic look. Thanks to Le Phong, the door handles were replaced with color-matched Suburban handles. Out back, the rear chrome bumper was sandblaster to prep for color-matched paint. The red factory lenses were ditched for smoked LED taillights from RECON Accessories. Finally, a Gaylord’s bed lid was installed over the Vortex-lined bed.
It was time to head into the spray booth at L&G Enterprises so that Theresa Contreras and the rest of the crew could put their talents to work. The goal was to bring in the monochromatic luxury look with a few custom techniques. The Lexus Smoky Granite Mica top color was chosen to match the stock GM Greystone Metallic paint creating an elegant monochromatic two-tone. The BASF R-M colors were mixed and sprayed to make way for the graphic that Theresa laid down. A combination of the two colors from BASF R-M was used in conjunction with black and silver for the graphic that features shadowing, a brushed aluminum effect and flat, clear finish to set it apart from the standard two-tones of the world. The graphic was also added near the rear tailgate. The Street Scene bumper cover was painted to match, and the grille shell and Grillcraft insert were painted in Smoky Granite Mica, and then hit with BASF R-M Ultra Flat Clear to match the graphic on the door.
The final steps before the SEMA show were all about the interior, most importantly, bringing in some of the exterior custom touches to complete the package. With luxury being a key element of the build, seat covers in graphite suede and gray and granite leather from Pecca Leather were installed after the armrests were filled. For the audio portion, Adam at Extreme Audio & Kustoms in Riverside, California, put his talents to work crafting custom door speaker pods to house three sets of Pioneer Electronics 6 ¾-inch TS-D1720C component speakers powered by a Pioneer GM-D9500F four-channel 800-watt amplifier. Under the rear seat sits a pair of 10-inch Pioneer TS-SW2501S4 shallow subwoofers powered by a 1,200-watt Pioneer GM-D8500M amplifier. The highlight of the audio system is a custom-made iPad dock in the center console run through the Pioneer AVH-P42000DVD head unit. Powering all of the audio gear is a Kinetik HC1800 power cell hooked up to a Powermaster high output alternator via a Painless high output alternator kit. Finishing things off, a Grant Products Revolution steering wheel was installed, keeping the factory airbag intact.
Project Greystone came to a conclusion with window tint from HOT Motorsports to protect all of the goodies inside. The end result was a blend of luxury, performance and custom truck all in a neat, monochromatic package. Check out the source box for information on all of the companies involved with the build!
