Crafting a One-Off Exhaust System With MagnaFlow’s Custom-Build Universal Exhaust Kit

Now that Pacific Coast Customs and Bio Kustumz’s 2008 GMC Denali is flat on the ground, tucking 26-inch KMC wheels that get power to each corner, it is time to button up everything else that needs to be done to get the AWD Denali back on the road. The Denali maintains its all-wheel drive functionality thanks to replacing the front axle assembly with one out of a Toyota Tacoma, allowing longer axles to be machined for more articulation. Max Fish from Bio Kustumz also made a set of one-off spindles, control arms and ‘bag mounts. While Max took care of the front, Robbie Azevedo of PCC took care of the back end, making custom link bars, mounts and a panhard bar, keeping floor space in mind on the SUV. The final step to get the Denali’s suspension finished is to install a custom exhaust system that, like the rest of the SUV, doesn’t cut any corners.

ST-1003-SLAM-lead1It would be easy to simply bolt on an aftermarket muffler and dump the exhaust right before the rearend so that it avoids the axle and link bars, but “easy and normal” are not in the OEM Terror project’s vocabulary. If so, it would look and function the same as every other SUV out there. Dumping the exhaust before the rear axle would also increase noise and fumes inside of the SUV because it would still dump under the cabin. Routing an exhaust system up and around the rear axle so that it exits out of the rear of the SUV is the best option. This would normally require plenty of bending and some cursing over at your local muffler shop. Thankfully, MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust offers custom-build universal exhaust kits and universal stainless steel mufflers that provide a variety of bends and all of the hardware you need to put your own custom system together.

The build kits consist of enough hangers to get the tubes installed, two flange sections, two 180-degree bends, four 90-degree bends, four 45-degree bends, and two 54-inch straight pipe sections. The kits come in several pipe diameter sizes from 2 1/4 to 3 inches. We opted for the large 3-inch pipe kit to expel the gasses from the powerful V-8 6.2L engine. A stainless steel muffler was also installed to add some horsepower. Using the kit, you can easily piece together a custom exhaust system yourself by simply trimming and welding together the bends.
