About
Here's the newest member of my stable. A 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger Special. I bought this to use as general transportation and as a fun cruiser. This is my first MOPAR ever! I've owned several Fords in my day and tons of Chevrolets but I've never owned anything from the Chrysler line up. I have always liked the Dodge Darts & Plymouth Valiants and of course the Chargers, Challengers, Road Runners etc. though and when I saw this one in my favorite color (any shade of green!) on eBay last week I knew it was time to take the plunge. Since I already have one vehicle I'm doing a total restoration on I liked that this one already had a very solid/straight body with new paint & the seats have been recovered.
Specs
The engine is the original venerable Slant 6 sending power to a Torqueflite trans and a set of super high 2.76:1 highway gears out back. It will do zero to 60+! The car was sold new in Charlotte, NC and had spent her entire life in that area. In the 36 years since her birth she has accumulated a whopping 80,000 miles and still runs, rides and drives like "new cars should." She is about as basic as you can get. The only option I think she came with was power steering. She didn't even come with a radio and in her 36 years here on earth nobody has installed a stereo in her yet as evidenced by the factory radio delete plate still in the dash and no speaker cut outs in any of the interior panels. I'm a diehard car guy though and listening to that Slant 6 purr is music to my ears, although I may install a secret audio sound system in her one day so I can listen to some classic rock on those beach trips! I plan to finish the restoration job up by replacing the door and window seals, rechroming the front bumper (the rear bumper has already been rechromed) and detailing the engine compartment, interior and trim. I will more than likely replace the slanted 6 someday with a small V8 and maybe a 4 or 5 speed tranny but I plan to enjoy her just the way she is for a while. Plus if gas prices continue to soar I may just have to stick with the six, it's not like that would be a bad thing after all, the inline 6 runs smooth and strong and will cruise at 75MPH all day long without breaking a sweat!
