Best of luck on this project... I personally think the 84 TA is a much better car than the Cam-Arrow... But because I own one, my view might be slanted.

1984 Pontiac Trans Am (Trans-formed: Part 2)

Trophies: 1 Give a trophy Last updated Jan 17, 2009

Photo of a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am (Trans-formed: Part 2)

About

I bought this 1984 Pontiac Trans Am in July 2006 for $400. There was no engine or transmission, however the car was nearly rust free. At the time I already owned a 1984 Trans Am, but that car had some bondo work and the undercarriage was pretty rotted. The plan was to slowly combine the best parts from both of these cars into one nice car and then sell everything that was left over. That didn't go as planned though because I purchased a 1972 Camaro RS (my dream car) in April 2007 and therefor this project went on the back burner.
During the summer of 2008, I got some motivation and resumed work on this project. It took the whole summer, but I finally compiled all the best parts from both cars in one section of my garage. All of the left over parts were then installed into the first Trans Am I owned and that car was sold just before winter. Now I was left with a rust free project car and a ton of goodies (Corvette 327 engine, stock 10 bolt rear disc differential, mint deluxe tan interior, nice sound & in-car entertainment system and GTA crosslace rims... just to name a few).
Over the winter between 2008 and 2009 I plan on smoothing the engine bay, paint the floor and undercarriage with POR15, install Dynamat & new carpet and get all of the interior panels restored and reinstalled. If I manage to get this far then sometime next summer I "could" potentially put the car back on the road. That way I could drive it around until I can afford a nice new paint job. Or maybe I'll leave the sun faded, clear coat peeling, beat up looking original paint job on it and make a sleeper - who knows.
It's going to take time to get this car where I would like it to be, but I'll try to post pictures as I make progress (unless some other project gets in the way again).

Specs

Engine:
1966 Corvette 327
Bored 30 over
Speedpro domed pistons
Duntov 30/30 cam
Crane roller tip rockers
Edelbrock RPM Perfomer intake
Holley 4160 carb
MDS 8.5 wires

This is the engine that I plan on using until I can build something better for this car. It has a custom fabricated breather and PCV system to keep the original aluminum Corvette valve covers on the engine (the original Corvette covers had no holes or baffles in them). This engine has been dynoed at 240.4HP @ 5875rpm and 276.6 torque @ 3680.
Down the road I would like to build a supercharged and fuel injected 350 or 383. It would be similar to the engine that is in my Camaro. I already have a spare B&M Superjection kit for the build.

Drivetrain:
I have a spare 700r4 that I can install, but I would rather use a 4L60E or a 4L80E instead. I also plan on purchasing a B&M Megashifter and upgrading the differential gears to 3:73.

Exterior:
Like my previous Trans Am, this car has T-tops (which I love). I plan on using the GTA rims that I kept. The rims already have 255/50/16 Z rated Kumho tires installed. I might purchase a fiberglass daytona hood since I really liked the look of it on my last Trans Am. I'm not really sure what to do about the paint yet. These cars look awesome in black and gold, but I might leave it alone and make a sleeper.

Interior:
I kept all of the original mint tan interior along with the custom flamed door panels I fabricated from the Trans Am I sold so those parts will be installed in this car. I already purchased a new carpet and the interior panels are being restored by Moser's in Buffalo, NY. I also have a bunch of audio and in-car entertainment equipment laying around so I'll probably reinstall that stuff: Pioneer CD player, Memphis amps, Audiobahn subs, three LCD monitors and a PS2.
