1978 Chevrolet Monza Hatchback
“T-DEVIL”
Last Updated: Apr 27, 2008
About
This is my favorite car I wish I still had. It had a lot of respect. It pounded hard and was heard from blocks away. It was one of the fastest cars in this town for a little while. I called it T-Devil for the Tasmanian Devil as this is just what it was. A small car with a nasty bite.
Specs
1978 Chevy Monza Hatchback. 355 Chevy 4-bolt main motor, with 11-1 compression on factory rods, polished beams, and ARP bolts. The crankshaft was a factory forged steel piece. I used Clevite bearings and Sealed Power Chrome Moly Rings. The heads were Double Hump 2.02/1.6, Manley Severe Duty valved, Comp Cams springs, 10 degree locks, and Harland Sharpe roller rockers. The cam was a ..580/.580 lift solid cam that was from Competition Products. The intake was a Edelbrock Victor Jr. and I used a Holley 750 Double Pumper carb. Oiling was handled with a Milodon wet sump system. Fuel was handled by a Mallory Comp 140 system with AN 8 fuel lines and the ignition was also handled by Mallory components. The trans was a turbo 350 with a Fairbanks 3500-4000 stall convertor and a full competition valve body. It had a lot of chrome and other goodies.
Factory Options
This car was an original 305 SB Chevy car with a 3.08 rearend ratio. The trans was a turbo 250. It had 13" wheels and tires on it. It came factory with single exhaust. Nothing exotic here but rather a little fun car. Enough to let you know it had potential and fast enough to hold its own with the factory cars of it's time.
Mods
I added an 8 pt roll cage, 4.56 gears, Moser aftermarket axles, U.S. Body Fiberglass hood with an 8" torpedo scoop. I used 15" x 8" Center Line rear wheels and 15" x 4" on the front. The battery was mounted in the rear of the car along with the NOS bottle for the 175 HP system that was on board. I used an aluminum radiator. I used all Auto Meter gauges and tach. RCI racing seats, seat covers, 5 way racing harnesses, and a Cheetah Command Center that housed all my switches on the console covering my Hurst Q-Stick shifter. There was an 8 gallon fuel cell installed in the rear of the hatch as well. The rear suspension had custom made solid tubed lower control arms with aluminum bushings that I made. I used an airbag in the rear passenger side coil spring to help launch it straight.
