Have you ever done something, and the next day thought.....WHY?

This was one of those times for me. I really, REALLY want a '71-73 Mustang Fastback. So, last summer, I read an ad in the classifieds for what the guy claimed to be a '71 fastback about 50 miles from my home. I grabbed my cash, ($1,200.00) and hit the road. When I got there, he rolled up the garage door, and I was sold.

The hood was laying in place, but not bolted. It was that agressive NASA hood that made the sale. I had to climb over the spare pieces to look at the car, and I was really disappointed to find that the guy had no clue what he was talking about. This is obviously a notchback, not a fastback, and then he tells me that it's a Grande. (Anyone who knows about these cars would know that Grandes only came in notchback form.)

At any rate, with two brand new bumpers, new core support, two new quarter panels, a garage full of other spare pieces, the deal-making hood, and a running 351 Cleveland (most of which, including the quarters, could be used on a fastback), I figured $1,200.00 was still not a bad deal. I didn't start to change my mind until I had paid for my brand-new basket case and started loading cardboard boxes of parts onto the back of my brothers pickup.

As I followed the rollback hauling my beauty on the drive home, I was really wondering what the heck I got myself into. I'm hoping to stumble across a fastback cheap, because I really have a lot of great parts. If I haven't found anything by next Spring, i'm going to start putting this thing back together. I'm thinking like a semi gloss or flat black, sort of rat-rod reminiscent. You know, classic muscle car stance, slightly higher in back than in front, wide rear tires, thumping exhaust..... Any suggestions?
