Here's a more recent shot of my Ghia. I finally got a pair of radials for the rear so I wouldn't have to run slicks all the time.
This is a one owner car until the fall of 2009 where it has come out of 8 years of California storage and 40 years of limited use. It was always stored indoors and shows it.
The paint is the original colour but had a cosmetic paint freshening about 10 years ago and other than routine maintenance items is the way it was built. The car will stay stock inspite of my passion for V8 240z's because these very early series 1 cars are now becoming rare and collectable.
1964 Karmann Ghia. Sea Blue paint. Custom interior with matching pleats (blue). Original condition. All modifications are reversible. The dash is original and un-cut.
The current street engine is estimated at 190hp. Best 1/4 mile is a 13.05 at over 100mph. A messed up launch netted a slow 60' time. When matched to the normal 1.56-1.60 60 foot times, the car is a 12.80 car "as is."
Future plans call for a stout 2332cc "street/strip" engine with an estimated 240hp. Expected e.t.'s are to be high 11's at nearly 120mph. Have the parts to re-assemble, just not the time to build it.
Stock specs are 0-60 in about 8.2 seconds with a top speed of approximately 120 mph
The car had only a few options when new. They included white wall tires, an AM radio with antenna and seat belts.
This is a California spec car meaning they all seemed to get the dealer aluminum slots and this one also got air conditioning which still works fine. There were virtually no options on these cars that were not installed at a dealer level.
Currently running a "Street" engine displacing 2054cc's. Internals include a 74mm Tony Mance crankshaft, wedgemated to a 12lbs flywheel. Scat 5.400" I-beam connecting rods push 94mm Mahle pistons. Heads are vintage Lonne Reed "Head Shop" Wedge-Ports with 42x37.5 valves. Compression is a hefty 10.92 to 1. Induction comes through a pair of geniune Italian Weber 48 IDA carburators with 42mm venturis. Exhaust exits through Gene Berg Enterprises 1 3/4" merged header with my own fabricated Flowmaster 2 1/2" muffler.
The transmission is a highly modified Type 1 gearbox. Built by Dave Folts (La Habra CA), it features a Rhino case, ERCO gears (4.25/2.56/1.70/1.31) with a 3.885 R&P.
Suspension modifications include Sway-A-Way 28mm rear torsion bars, a CB Performance front beam with Puma Adjusters.
Wheels are a set of ERCO spun aluminum rims. Fronts are the popular 3.5" bubble zero offset rims with original Michelin 135 radials. Rears are a custom-made 5 1/4" wide rim with a rear off set to fit inside the tight Ghia fender well. I have two sets of the rears (one for radials, one for drag slicks).
None and will not get my usual V8 transplant, the car is just too nice and it is surprisingly quick in its stock form.
