Essex was a lower-priced companion make alongside Hudson. It only lasted a few years, but Hudson revived the idea a few years later with another brand they called "Terraplane".

GM was big on "Companions", too. Pontiac started as the companion for Oakland, and immediately outsold it. Cadillac's companion was LaSalle. Buick had Marquette and Olds had one too, but I don't remember what it was called offhand. Chevrolet grew from the Little Motor Car Company, and that was continued as Chevy's companion into the mid-20's.
