In early 59 Willys introduced the Jeep 'Gala' to the export market and gained wide popularity as a "fun car" at resorts in Hawaii, Mexico & the Caribbean area. Complete with fringe on it's top and is gaily trimmed in pink, green or blue candy stripes. In fall of 59 a simalar model the Jeep 'Surrey' was introduced in the US market. Designd by Willys Jeep primarily for low-cost rental to guest at resort hotels and vacation centers. Overall only 1089 Surrey Gala's were built between 1959-64 making this one of the rare Jeep models. http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg152/64_Surrey/Surrey%20Gala%20Scans/?start=all
This Willys was original owned & used by Hawaiian hotel as guest rental on island of Oahu. Still displays the hotel parking sticker on rear bumper. Brought back to mainland in early 70s and put out to pasture in Portland. Found this Jeep while visiting my daughter who was serving aboard the aircraft carrier CVN-72 (Lincoln) back in 2001. Jeep was mostly complete but sea salt air was not kind to the tub. Seats & top were missing. Between finding parts / restoration & life it took till 07 to finish the jeep here at my one-man operation in the midwest. Surrey is a real crowd pleaser at parades car shows & just driving around town. World famous wartime 'Jeep" 4 cyl L-Head engine in this classic Willys.
