I love this pic! I've been to the Colonial a few times myself for their weekend special movies. I saw "It's A Wonderful Life" there a couple of days before Christmas a few years ago, and I've seen "Gone With The Wind" and "The Wizard Of OZ" there too. I know you can see all of these movies on T.V., but it's just not the same as on the big screen.

The Colonial Theater was one of the premier movie houses in the western Philadelphia suburbs from the turn of the 20th Century through the early 1960's. It gradually declined with the advent of "Multiplex" theaters in malls, and this led to it nearly being demolished in the 1980's. It was rescued by a grass-roots effort of local residents who grew up with the Colonial and fans of the cult classic movie "The Blob" (See my album on the movie), where the theater played a major role - at least for one famous scene! This photo shows how the Colonial Theater appears today, restored to it's appearance at the time of the filming of "The Blob". It shows first-run movies in the evenings and on Saturdays, but also hosts live performances of popular bands of all eras from swing and Big Band through Classic Rock and even later. It also has an annual midnight showing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", complete with a costume contest, and the annual "Blobfest".

Damn, I was born in the wrong generation I wish things were still like this. We don't have any theatres like this up here in Ma. Although we have a pretty cool drive in thats always fun to take the old cars too. That car looks so clean.
