1968 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (Plum Crazy)

Last updated Nov 3, 2011

Photo of a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (Plum Crazy)

This car is a beauty. "Plum Crazy or Plum Pearl" as she is known, belongs to my oldest daughter Hannah -- age 11. My late father-- a classic car dealer-- gave the car to my husband when Hannah was 2 years old, with the understanding that he had to give it to her when she turns 16. Well, we didn't wait that long ;-) She knows it's her car and she loves to ride in it and take it to car shows.
The car originally was a hardtop. A previous owner (16 years old) had the top cut off and made into the convertible. The eye-catching plum color is a factory special order, requested by the original owner who worked for Ford. As such, the color code on the door tag is blank. The color is called "Plum Pearl" and is one of only 300 made in this Plum color. The GT package coupled with the special paint makes this a rare car. The black interior is in great shape -- the metal areas of the interior need a little touch-up painting, but all in all the interior is nearly perfect. The exterior needs to be repainted, but this is not a "trailer queen". This car is driven at least once a week and sometimes more, so a few rock pecks are to be expected!!
Hannah and "Plum" have won quite a few awards -- one of her favorites is one she received while we lived in California --First Place from "Mustangs at the Queen Mary" in Long Beach California and one of her most recent -- Ridez of the Timez award from CARS (
But the most special thing about Plum is that my Dad loved this car and loved his granddaughter enough to give it to her, passing on his legacy and love for classic cars and keeping his memory alive.

This 1968 Ford Mustang GT was orginally owned by a Ford Employee who specially ordered the 'plum-pearl' paint from the factory in 1967. It is the only GT-equipped 'plum' Mustang
known to exist and was 1 of only 300 Mustangs produced in this color. This is a 'J-code' car with matching serial numbers made in Dearborn and it has a 302-4v 230hp V-8 engine.
The convertible top was added by a previous owner in 1994. Afterwards it was proudly displayed at the MCA National 30 Year Anniversary Celebration in Charlotte.
