No longer owned

I found this car while heading to Van Nuys night with a friend in 1980. I had recently destroyed my datsun Z up on Mulholland Dr. while racing Robert Caradine(kung fus'younger bro) and had the insurance cash in the bank.We were in my friends 73 Z/28 and pulled up on this orange/black 73 Z28 ,and what do you do? Drag race maybe? Hell ya! At the next few lights we raced and each time got beat, but i noticed it had a for sale sign in the back window. we flagged the guy down haggled price, came to an agreement and two days later(monday) i went to the bank and came home with The Orange Pumkin. It turned out that even though the thing was fast it needed some repair and some freshening of both the M22 and the well worn but well built engine that had originally been built for a Saugus Speedway sportsman class car that did not get completed but with some minor changes was perfect for a really fast steet car

when I first got it it was .030 over LT-1 pistons ,cam, steel crank, pink rods polished like a mirror ,Edelbrock TM1 intake with a 800cfm DP Holley.headman 1 3/4in headers, Hays clutch,15 lb fly wheel, lakewood scatter shield,M22 trans,4.56 gears in the 10 bolt posi, and the part that made it all work.GM angle plug"turbo" cyl heads that were ported by AirFlowReasearch .I re rung & brgding it and drove that way for a year shifting 6500-7000 power shifts every chance i could and tore it down, went .060over( mods sec. below)

Factory Options

norwood built real Z/28 , NO air

when i rebuilt it ,i put in a mech grind that had .518lift 242@.050 int and.524 lift 248@.050 ex w/108lsa in place of the LT-1 GM cam I pulled out the TM1 intake and replaced it with a Holley strip dominator. i went through clutches every 6 mo or so and after spitting out the 4.56s i had Hoopers rear ends install a set of 4.10 gears with a complete re builld w/ a super tight clutch pack posi. with this set up and the rest of the car set for turning.Koni shocks TA 1 1/4in fr& a15/16in rear swaybars delrin bushings heim joint end links,Gulstrand thin alum body to frame mounts.cut big block fr springs.delrin rear spring eye bushings acouple of extra clamps on the fr part of the leafs and the fr brkt modified per Herb Adams with G/50/15in front tires on 7in ralleys and L/50/15 on vette 8in ralleys w/Caldwell bias ply race re caps the car would run mid 12s @around115 (i never could get it to leave) with a mild drag race set up (slapper bars, drag shocks skinneys up front and some real slicks it might have run in the 11s. i do have some time slips from brotherhood racway in san pedro somewhere one other cool thing i put the 8" ralleys on the front and Otto at perfect wheel made me a set of 9" 0 offset out of my 7" fronts for $12.50 ea!!! even back then(early 80s) what a deal!
