This was my first car. I bought it from the original owner in 1984 when I was 16 years old. It had 16,000 miles on it at the time and was well cared for by the former owner. The former owner was selling it to buy a new Camaro and told me later he wished he had kept the Cutlass. It went into storage in the garage at my parent's home when I went to college in 1986 and it stayed there until 2001 because I was moving all over the country and didn't have a place to keep it. It was stored on jack stands at all four corners and when I returned to visit a couple times a year I would start it and let it idle in Drive for 30 minutes to lube the drive line, then changed the motor oil in it. Each time before starting it I would crank the engine for about 15 seconds to let it build oil pressure, and would also run the A/C each time it was started and it still blows cold on the original A/C charge. StaBil was kept in the gas tank and I drained the tank several times over the years. It doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects from being stored for 15 years. It now has 26,000 original miles. The car is all original except paint (due to damage, painted original color), tires (due to dry rot) and battery (due to age). The tires were replaced with ones as close to original as I could find, and the battery is an AC Delco similar to the original. No mechanical parts have ever been replaced. It even has the original belts and hoses, and many paper tags and paint marks are still present on the undercarriage. The car has been garaged every day of its life and has been driven in rain only once. The interior still smells like new.
You don't ride in this car, you glide in it. The ride is so smooth and soft it's like floating on a cushion of air, totally different than any new car today, even luxury models. The seats were made with velvet velour pillow-top cushions at the factory and they feel like a Laz-Z-Boy recliner.
This was the last year for the large A-body Cutlass. In 1978 the Cutlass was downsized to the G-body style. My car was built in July 1977, right at the very end of the model year and was one of the very last to be produced. The Cutlass Supreme model was discontinued in 1997 with the last one produced on Feb. 21, 1997. Oldsmobile produced its last vehicle at 10:00 am on April 29, 2004 in Lansing, Michigan, where the first car with the Oldsmobile name plate was produced in 1897, closing the books on the oldest car company in America. What a shame!

The original base price of the car was $4,979.65; but the options pushed the purchase price to $7,020.65! In today's money, that would be like ordering $10,000 worth of options on a $25,000 car!
