1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA (TURKEY)

Last updated Jan 16, 2009

Photo of a 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA (TURKEY)

This is my 1988 Pontiac Trans am GTA. I was 16 years old when this car was new. My mom had just finished college in May of 88. She was working for Sim Fryson Pontiac in Fulton NY. I visited mom often at the dealership and had he privilage of seeing the new 88 TA's delivered. On the showroom floor was a GTA exactly like the one I have today. It was love at first sight. I even put the car on my wish list for xmas that December. Little did I know that in May of 1988 while I was dreaming about the GTA a man by the name of Ken W. (a NYS Thruway Supervisor, aged 39 at the time was taking delivery of my brand new GTA. Ken purchased "Turkey" from Navelli Pontiac in Utica NY just 46 miles away from my home. I remember my mom raving about how much she liked the Trans Am at the time. Seems Turkey led an extremely pampered life. Ken was meticulous about keeping records in order. I guess it comes with the job of Thruway Supervisor. Ken maintained Turkey for almost 20 years until he decided to let her go in June of 2007. He hadn't had her registered since 2000 and the may 2000 inspection sticker proved that to be true. She sat in Ken's heated garage in the back covered and tucked away. I had searched for all of these years for this car but I kept coming across cars that had 90 plus K and the yokedokes wanted upwards of 15G's for their scrap metal TAs. I also knew that I wanted the exact car of my dreams or nothing at all. Black with Tan Leather and the full option packages. I searched before there ever was an internet until the day I searched AutoTrader, Key word GTA and there she was. Ken had advertised her as a 1 owner 46k mile yes folks that's fourty six thousand original miles needing paint and "some mechanical work". Let's just say that Ken's asking price was insanely low for this car and I even told him so. Out of true love for the car and the fact that this car was a part of this man's body, as much as I wanted her I couldn't let him let her go without seriously considering how truly special she is in today's market. I walked away from Turkey that day with Ken's appreciation for my honesty and a promise that if he did decide to sell her for sure he would sell her to me. A month goes by and he gives me a call and says she is mine if I want her. Unfortunately, the cash I stashed for Turkey went toward my wife's college tuition just 1 day before Ken's call. He said he would wait a few weeks for me to come up with the cash. Well this was now July and I didn't get the cash together till November. Ken had all but given up on me and was sure I was a tire kickin' BSer. Until I called him up one blustery snowy day and told him I would be up to give him the cash and haul Turkey away.. It took me forever to get the Uhaul truck and trailer but I finally made it to Ken's house about 9PM. He was shocked to see me actually come through. A young man's dream come true.
