Back in '91, my ex-wife & I were shopping Camaros and firebirds even though she wanted a BMW (we did eventually go through 4 of those) The car market was very bad and McNamara Pontiac in Orlando kept telling us about this TransAm they had but was at the sales managers house. Finally we arranged to see it at the dealership. It was ordered for a failed pepsi-cola contest...lack of cuistomers and huge sales staff kept trying to push this car on us over the brand new carburated firebirds. At one point there were like 9 slaes guys almost blocking the exit doors. We took a test drive and left. They called us back and we drove it again..the manager said we should take it for the weekend. We did and brought it back.
The following weekend they made the same offer. We returned on a Sunday and went ahead and financed it. Basically, she is a GTA without the badging. Has the LT-1 with the corvette tuned-port injection, WS-6 perfromance suspension and the deep-dish wheels that cannont be rotated front-to-back. . She also has the automatic that can be tossed around between gears manually with no harm. The car still runs and looks brand new and no mods have ever been made (yet) I joke that this is my automatic transmission preventative maintenance test-bed; the trans-fluid dip stick has never-ever been pulled out...160k miles and shifting strong and fine even with occasional harsh treatment. Compared to the Fox-Mustang (my favorite car) the T/A wins hands down for stock interior, electrical and mechanical reliability. The stang wins hands down in the rust-free arena as the T/a gets occassional surface rust in the lower inner doors, inner hatch, inner engine compartment. I'm a die-hard Mustang fanatic but I'll never get rid of the T/A...last week my mom passed away 4/27/2008:; my daughter and I drove her 1000 miles non-stop to Ohio and 1000 miles non-stop back to FLA no problems. Left on fumes, filled up 3 times and arrived on fumes. Oh yeah, the T/a wins in the stock mpg arena...somewhat unfair as the stang has mods. The stang gets about 140 miles on a tank where the T/A gets 300!.
