1972 Chevrolet Vega GT Convertible (The Red Car)

About

I bought this car in 1991. It was a stock Vega with a worn-out motor and tired paint and upholstry. I reinforced the frame with subframe connectors and a six-point roll bar, then chopped off the roof with a Skilsaw. I had a welder create metal end-caps for the windshield pillars. The car's original Hugger orange paint was covered with a candy red paint job with black z-28 stripes. The fiberglass hood, rear spoiler and front spoiler came from Unlimited and make it look like a tiny Camaro. In 2012, the engine was rebuilt again to repair two broken rings.

Specs

The engine is a Vega 2300 four cylinder that was blueprinted and balanced. The head has been ported and polished and the valves are propelled by a nasty Crower camshaft. Fuel is sucked through a two-barrel 32/36 DCEV Weber carb and Offenhauser Dual-Port aluminum intake. Exhaust dumps out into a long-tube header 2-1/2" exhaust and Magnaflow muffler. The four-speed has been replaced with a rare T-50 five-speed from a '79 Skyhawk.

Factory Options

It has a GT rear sway-bar and GT Vega wheels.

Mods

A beefy front sway bar from DOBI keeps the front end on the ground while zooming around the twisties. I made the oak dashboard and stuffed it full of VDO Heritage Gold meters.
The carpet kit came from ACC and upholstry was renewed in tan vinyl. A monza center console was added when the motor was rebuilt and a T-50 five-speed was swapped in.
