My dad bought the Monte new, in 1986. Nicknamed "RDKLXPRS" (Roadkill Express), because the is the license plate that was on the car while i grew up and hope to put it back on one day.
He and my mom went to the dealership one night to look at a new car. I'm not sure if he knew what he was going for. The dealership was already closed for the night. Before they closed that night they had received a car hauler in and hadn't unloaded the cars from it. The Monte was one of the cars on the car hauler. They went back the next morning and purchased the car before they even had a chance to take it off the truck. This is the very first car i ever rode in. It took me home from the hospital when i was born in 1990. So obviously me and this car have a lot of history together. I remember as a kid riding school in it and my dad driving it to work every other day. 180 miles at a time. (He and one of his friends with a camaro would take turns driving their cars to work.)
In 2003 the original 305 finally let go after 330,000 miles. My dad planned to sell it after that. It was on a street corner for a while with a for sale sign on it. After a while my mom rode by it one day and she decided to pull it off the corner paint it and put in a crate 350 and then she saved it for me. Its now my car with 376,000 miles on the body (not a typo, its good to see the jaw drop of whoever is putting the mileage in the computer for state registration). When its clean, it looks like it just came off the showroom floor. But being in school and in FL its hard to keep it clean. Its still running strong and i don't ever plan to get rid of it.
I live in NC, but go to school in Daytona Beach FL. So Monte travels back and forth 4 times a year. It was stolen from my school on Oct 9 '09, the police had already found it parked across the street at a high school when i was notified that it was gone. It already had a broken flywheel and flopped around when it was cold. I think this was the main reason the thieves ditched the car, and that it didnt make it to a chop shop, because they didn't think they would get very far. It wasn't in too bad of a condition, they didn't tear it up to bad. I got it back, replaced what they had messed up. I installed an alarm and its back in my possession and hope it doesn't leave again. Some pictures have my moms 2 Camaros in them.
My dad purchased the car for me in 2006. When we got the car it had a peeling stock paint, sunfaded and warn out interior, drooping headliner and was in need of a good deep cleaning. The car had about 110k miles on it and had had the engine and trans both replaced by the dealer(one was at 60k and one at 40k). Other than the engine and trans the car was completely factory and rust free. We had the car repainted the same original silver and the stripes were re-applied. We then replaced the warn out carpet, drooping headliner, sun visors and the seat covers. The only mods that have been done to it are the aftermarket stereo and subs we installed into a custom box and an electronic trunk release.
