HERE'S A CUSTOM DIECAST I BUILT OF DAVID PEARSON'S 1980 HAWAIIAN TROPIC CHEVY MONTE CARLO.DAVID WON THE REBEL 500 WITH THIS CAR,IT WAS HIS LAST WIN IN NASCAR.HE DID GO ON AND RACE FOR A FEW MORE YEARS,BUT NEVER ONE ANOTHER RACE.
(Since this is a 1:25 scale model and not an actual 1:1 scale car, I'll only accept challenges from other models, diecasts, and toys against it.)
Back in 2000, Scale Auto Enthusiast magazine held a model contest in celebration of their 20th anniversary. They bound a set of decals into the anniversary issue of the magazine, and the only guideline for the contest was that the entries had to display these decals, or at least most of them. The entries ranged from NASCAR stock cars, Indy cars, Sprint cars, and drag racers through a magazine delivery truck! I built two entries for the contest (meaning that I had to go out and buy an additional copy of the magazine in addition to the one I received as a part of my subscription!), this Monte Carlo and a 2000 Chrysler Concorde Winston Cup car (see my "Scale Auto Magazine Concorde" model). This Monte Carlo started out as an MPC annual kit that I had built back in 1979. It was the best thing I could come up with to represent the era. I joined the body to a reissued AMT early 1980's NASCAR chassis. These two models, the Monte Carlo and the Concorde, were meant to represent two different eras in a race team's existance, with the same sponsor and number the entire time. I used logos clipped from back issues of the the magazine to replace the modern ones supplied on the decal sheet, since this car was meant to be from 20 years earlier, when Scale Auto Enthusiast magazine was just starting out. I decoupaged them to the model's body with clear paint. I used some sponsor decals from a set of Pinewood Derby dry transfers as well.

THIS IS AN ACTION NASCAR DIECAST THAT WAS STRIPPED TO THE BARE METAL,PRIMED,PAINTED,DECALED AND CLEAR COATED FOR DECAL PROTECTION AND AN AMAZING SHINE.THIS CAR WAS NEVER MADE BY ANY DIECAST COMPANY.IT WAS DONE TO THE SPECS. OF THE ORIGINAL CAR THAT WEAS RACED BY DAVID PEARSON,ALSO KNOWN AS "THE SILVER FOX" HE GOT THAT NAME BY HANGING AROUND THE TOP TEN OR FIFTEEN ALL DAY,THEN AT THE END OF THE RACE HE WOULD COME THROUGH THE FIELD LIKE A FOX AND WIN THE RACE.
First I had to disassemble the model and strip the paint. Next, I cut open the trunk lid and filled the head- and taillights with filler panels. These were painted body color - remember that this was the era before fake head- and taillight stickers! I also added the spoiler on the decklid and a front air dam under the nose of the car. I added the fast break fuel filler to the left quarter panel. As I recall, I had to move the rear wheel openings forward about 2 scale inches to fit the chassis correctly. I added photoetched grilles to the car too. Notice the "Donuts" on the sides of the car - This model was built to show the car as it looked after a race, not all clean and shiny. This race car had a tough life with a race team that was just starting out and didn't have the money to repaint the car after every race.
The chassis and roll cage needed little modification to fit this body, since it was little different from the one it was designed for.
