I've been telling everybody that our van sucks to drive in the snow. Well, today proved it. We were supposed to meet Michelle's Mom in Duluth to celebrate Michelle's birthday. We started out about 8:30 this morning. It was just starting to rain. There was a winter weather advisory in effect, but it didn't seem too bad out. The thing about rain and cold pavement, when they come together they make ice. Black ice. The drive to Duluth is about 78 miles. We made it only about 15 miles when we started skating sideways. Now I was being tested as a driver and in my faith in God. I believe He was in control. We were on a straight and level section of county road 10 when the rear end started to come around. I counter-steered and fish-tail a few times keeping it on the road. We didn't scrub off enough speed before we went off the edge of the road heading into the ditch sideways. Somehow it stayed on all four wheels. But we were stuck. The engine was stalled out. I shut the wipers and head lights off and turned off the key. We were all shaken but not hurt. I got out to check for damage. All the tires were still up, wheels looked to still be straight up and down not bent. The tail-pipe hanger at the very rear was broken but the rest of the exhaust was okay. There didn't appear to be any chassis damage and nothing smoking or leaking so I fired it back up to see if I'd be lucky enough to drive out of the ditch. Tried backing up. That worked fine but I needed to go forward to get up to the road. Tires just spun. I tried backing up a little more but stopped because I saw the gully at the bottom of the ditch we missed by just a couple feet . Michelle and her son Bradee were both on their cell phones trying to find someone to help us. I knew Brad (my boss) and Dustyn (Michelle's other son that works with me) were at the shop painting the parts for the paper mill. They wouldn't be able to come out, so I didn't even try calling them. Michelle got ahold of Dave from church and he said he'd take care of some "stuff" and be on his way with a tug strap. Bradee got ahold of his boss, Joe. He said he only had a short tow strap, but he'd come to see if he could help. Dave and Joe showed up about the same time. Dave's tug-strap was longer so we hooked that to the van and the hitch on his truck. He pulled the van sideways about 60 feet through the ditch before we could get out of the ditch and onto the road. I thanked him several times before he had to leave. Joe said he'd follow us home to make sure we (and the van) were safe and okay. Everything seemed to be okay on the van except for that broken hanger. Nothing leaking. No funny smells or noises. Bertha survived! I believe it was all in God grace that we didn't end up rolled over off a curve or down in a deeper ditch or stuffed in the woods. It stayed on all four wheels. We were shaken but not hurt. We aborted our trip to Duluth. The weather just got worse so we didn't go anywhere today.
