Album photo
Description: In August 2009, a cam lobe and one lifter failed due to using the wrong motor oil for 5 years. When I replaced an old 2 bolt 350 in 2004 that was used during my Chevy's drag racing days in South Carolina with a 4 bolt 383, my engine man told me to use Mobil One synthetic oil. What he didn't know was the newer 383 was a 1973 (350 bored out) truck engine. Older engines prior to 1980 need the extra zync additives that used to be in ALL oils but were removed as oil companies were bought out or merged with others and newer engines no longer needed the additives. Many engine shops in Michigan have stated they have had more classic car cam failures this year than ever before because of this same problem. My new engine expert rebuilt the 383 with new lifters, rods, rings, bearings and cam shaft and tolod me to use Brad Penn 20W50 green racing oil that has the zinc in it.
