1974 gto ventura custom (option tent)
Last updated Apr 13, 2007
The GTO switched from being an option on the Pontiac LeMans to the Ventura in 1974. The 1974 Ventura/GTO was a much smaller car but closer to the original GTO than the large 1973 LeMans/GTO. The 1974 GTO could be ordered in two different body styles - the coupe notchback and the hatchback. This was the only year the the GTO was offered in a hatchback version. Pontiac made the most of this utility feature by offering an optional strap-on tent that could be attached to the open hatchback. The GTO may have been the first car that could be called a sport utility vehicle. The 1974 GTO's set of standard options included; shaker air cleaner hood scoop, 200hp 350ci engine, dual exhausts, and 3-speed manual transmission with floor mounted shifter. The 1974 GTO was the last model year for the classic GTO. You could purchase faster cars during these years, but they were relatively rare on the streets. With nearly 500,000 GTOs produced in eleven years, they were everywhere - they were all fast, they would give you a run when challenged, they became a legend.
