1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (Vac)
Last updated Jun 29, 2010
In the year 2000, I was working on a 1978 Trans Am when I heard about this car abandoned in a body shop in 1991. The shop owner notified the owner that he (the shop owner) had had a heart attack and was stopping work for a few monthes. After a recovery the shop attempted to contact the Trans Ams owner to no avail. They eventually moved the car to a corner and left it there disassembled in primer untill I rescued it in 2000.
I did research and found the codes to reveil it was supposed to be Nocturn Blue with Camel trim. A very attractive combination and luckily, the WS6 wheels and 4-wheel disc brake rear end were still intact. I later ran the car through Pontiac Historical Services to confirm its pedigree due to the build sheet being long gone.
I found that I knew the owner-not the one who abandoned it, but the one who sold it to him-and I named it after the fellow I knew. Vac.
Vac is heavily optioned and is alot of fun.
Vac has his original 403 Olds motor bored .040 over with a early set of Hi-Po heads, Edelbrock Performer Olds intake, headers, x-pipe, 2 1/2" exhaust exiting at the factory Trans Am splitter pipe, Quadrajet carb and cam similar to a Mondello grind.
He has a Turbo 350 with a shift kit and 3:08 Posi inside the WS6 rear.
Vac came crammed with options:
Deluxe Lighting package floor glove box trunk w/ deluxe map light
Power Trunk release
WS6 handling package (wheels brakes sway bar)
Air Conditioning (one day will have again)
Not to mention the Nocturn Blue and the Camel is just darn good looking!
