OE-Looking Auto Meter Gauges

January 24th, 2012

There’s no disputing that if you own a diesel and have modified it or tow heavy loads, you need a good set of aftermarket gauges to keep track of EGTs—at the very least, let alone trans temps and even boost levels. Read the rest of this entry »

From Rust Bucket to Magazine Cover Truck

January 18th, 2012

Ask any diesel enthusiast, and he or she will admit that most “project” trucks are never really done; they just become a work in progress.

Such has been the case for our own Project Beat-to-Neat, or Project 1st-Gen, as it has been called from time to time.

Nearly two years ago, we introduced you to our well-worn 1992 first-gen Dodge that was taking up residence in a farm field. The owner bought it for a song and has spent a lot of time and effort transforming it into a first-gen that any diesel enthusiast would be proud to own. Read the rest of this entry »

Power-Holding and Gear-Banging Improvements

January 12th, 2012

The Sigma Short Shift kit from dieselgeek.com is a billet aluminum replacement for the stock shifter.

We specifically purchased a manual transmission-equipped TDI for the strength and reliability over their automatic counterparts, but that doesn’t mean there is no room for improvement. To many VW drivers (including us), the long shift throws from the factory setup seem like they would be better suited for a domestic truck than a German sport sedan. Read the rest of this entry »

11th Annual Scheid Diesel Extravaganza

January 9th, 2012

Old-school lore had it that if you were lucky, you could get a “baker’s dozen” at your local small-town bakery. For regular customers, the baker would always toss in one extra donut as a nice bonus to keep the customers coming back. So, you always got more than you paid for.

Fast forward to 2011. Technically, this year’s Scheid Diesel Extravaganza celebrated its 11th year at the Terre Haute, Indiana, Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. Read the rest of this entry »

A Vintage Power Wagon with Cummins Power

January 3rd, 2012

The Dodge Power Wagon has been synonymous with military and off-road duty since its inception in 1940. Originally designed as a military transport, the truck evolved into a civilian version in 1946 and was based on a ¾-ton military chassis with heavy-duty 4×4 running gear.

The Power Wagon was produced as a pickup in both half- and ¾-ton versions through 1968, and after a brief break in production—and partly due to popular demand—the Power Wagon came back again in the ’70s. The final model, a W150, was rolled off the assembly line in 1980. Read the rest of this entry »

Diesel World Alumni

December 29th, 2011

Big Judd’s Harley Davidson Edition Excursion

Very few diesel owners have had their trucks featured in the pages of Diesel World Magazine more than once. Only a select few could be called DW alumni.

Judd Niederer, of Rexburg, Idaho, is one of them. Judd’s multicolored Dodge pickup graced the cover of the March 2009 issue, and now, he’s built another killer diesel worthy of a look-see in Diesel World. Read the rest of this entry »

Weekend on the Edge

December 25th, 2011

NADM Hosts 9th Annual Event

One of the few “old-school” events that has survived for any length of time is Weekend on the Edge, which has been held in Salt Lake City, and Ogden, Utah, for approximately nine years. The event is hallmarked by an evening of drag racing at Rocky Mountain Raceway, just outside Salt Lake City, followed by a full open house and dyno day the next day at Edge Products, in Ogden. More recently, a sled pull had been added to make Weekend on the Edge a true diesel triathlon. Read the rest of this entry »

Power Stroke Turbo for Towing

December 21st, 2011

BD Power’s Direct Replacement for the 7.3L

Nearly 10 years after its demise, the 7.3L Power Stroke is still one of the most sought-after diesel powerplants. The 1994-2003 Ford Power Stroke was the most popular light-duty diesel ever produced, and with new truck prices cresting over the $50,000 range, more and more owners are willing to invest a little money into those old 7.3L trucks to improve their overall performance and efficiency. OBS Fuel System Upgrade

December 18th, 2011

Lots of Ford lovers say that the ’94-’97-model Power Strokes were the last diesel trucks from Ford with character.

Driven Diesel’s New Regulated Return for the ’94-’97 Power Stroke

Among Ford purists, the last great Ford diesel truck ever produced with any styling character was the old body-style (OBS) Power Stroke.

These round-nosed beauties were the predecessors of the Super Duty and are fitted with a similar version of the 7.3L Power Stroke that eventually ended up between the fenders of the Super Duty. Read the rest of this entry »

Kerma TDI Q Loader and Custom Tunes

December 15th, 2011

Here’s our little VW TDI trying to “roll some coal!” There was definitely more smoke on both of the Kerma TDI tunes.

To further enhance the power and performance of our Jetta, Matt Ford (the “MF” in MF Automotive) used a KermaWare Q Loader to flash our engine ECU with a tune programmed to give us more torque and horsepower. After downloading our original factory tune to the Q Loader, it is emailed to Kerma TDI, where a custom tune is written and e-mailed back and then installed in the car with the Q Loader. We received a low-smoke tune, as well as a modified tune, for our engine. When we drove the car on the stock tune, it seemed as if the new Stage 1 Colt camshaft gave us a very modest bump in low rpm performance, but when the tunes were installed, the car really woke up—with a significant boost in torque and horsepower that could be felt from the driver’s seat.
