2. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve offering

Guests of Turtle Inn in Belize can experience the world’s only Jaguar preserve, a superb place for birding, hiking and possible wildlife sightings. The 128,000 acre wildlife sanctuary has well marked hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging and is a jaguar hotspot which also provides habitat to Howler Monkeys, Agouti, Brocket Deer and Peccary. This Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve takes guests on a picnic lunch, a fun tubing down the river, and a dip to cool off under refreshing waterfalls.

3. Monkey River Wildlife Adventure

Turtle Inn offers guests the opportunity to explore Monkey River by boat observing howler monkeys, coastal and wetland birds, iguanas, crocodiles and many other species of wildlife. With an experienced nature guide at the helm guests will slowly weave through the maze of mangrove islands that hug the shoreline. Guests may even see the endangered Manatee as they head south to Monkey River. As the boat moves slowly upriver the group will birdwatch and spot turtles, crocodiles and iguanas, followed by a hike through huge stands of bamboo and along jungle trails to view noisy troops of howler monkeys. This is a remarkable and exciting wildlife trip. On the way downriver the boatman will stop in the tiny village of Monkey River for a lunch and an opportunity to purchase souvenirs. (This tour is not recommended between the months of November to May due to the rainy season).

At Turtle Inn, the resort’s on-site ornithologist Melvin takes guests to enjoy the morning sun rising over the Caribbean Sea while strolling through the grounds of the resort. Of the country’s 590 recorded species, some of the most spectacular, and some of the rarest of species can be seen here versus elsewhere: the Lovely Cotinga, Ornate Hawk-Eagle and Rose-throated Tanager, as well as a host of colorful toucans, parrots and hummingbirds.
