Forget the perfectly restored FJ40 sitting outside a coffee shop. Stephen Staggs’ 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser was built to get dirty. This childhood dream build takes the legendary FJ40 platform and turns it into a serious rock-crawling machine ready for trails like Sand Hollow and beyond. With its wheelbase stretched to 120 inches, massive 40-inch Pro Comp tires, Dana 60 front axle, Chevy 14-bolt rear, Fox coilovers, custom suspension, and full hydraulic steering, this old-school Toyota has been transformed into one seriously capable rig. And then there’s what’s under the hood. Stephen ditched the original powerplant for an aluminum LS fitted with a Brian Tooley Racing cam, Holley Terminator fuel injection, and a custom exhaust. Power runs through an NV4500 manual transmission and a custom Atlas 5-to-1 transfer case, giving this FJ the gearing and muscle needed when the rocks start getting serious. Finished in eye-catching Viper Red and protected by custom fabrication from Backyard Customz, this isn’t a pavement princess pretending to be a trail rig. Stephen built this FJ40 to wheel hard—and that’s exactly what he does with it.
