1978 Ford F-150 Custom (Red Sled)

Last updated Mar 20, 2008

Photo of a 1978 Ford F-150 Custom (Red Sled)

My father and I went to visit one of his friends, and on the way up his long driveway I noticed a red '78 Ford pickup sitting under a tree. It had 32s, a rollbar, and looked from a distance to be in extremely good shape. I pointed it out to my father and asked him if maybe his friend would want to sell it. He then told me about how his friend had received the truck originally. The man's dad bought it as a wrecked truck in '78 when it had only 4,000 original miles. His dad had repaired all the damage, did some custom modification, added the rollbar, and a sunroof kit. A year later his father died in a car accident. "So," my dad said, "He's never going to sell that thing. Don't even bring it up." We visit with his friend for a good few hours, and as we're leaving he caught me looking over at the truck. As soon as I made eye contact with him I asked him, "Is there any way you're looking to sell that pickup? She's beautiful." At first my dad looked over at me like he was going to kill me, but his friend chuckled and said, "You know....I love that truck, but it has just been sitting there for 7 years now and I haven't done anything with it....Tell you what. You give me a hundred bucks and she's yours." Both my dad's and my jaws hit the dirt, and one week later I had her trailered and on the way to my house.
