We all know and love the original Mustang GT used in the movie Bullitt, which sold at auction in January 2020 for a cool $3.74 million. The influential muscle car made news just before that with Ford’s 50th anniversary release of the car with its 2019 Mustang Bullitt edition. It seemed like the car’s heritage was all the rage within the automotive industry at that point. The original movie car set the stage for pure American performance back in the late 1960s, and its reemergence on the modern custom scene got the gears moving for one classic Ford truck builder. The 1967 F-100 seen here is his take on what a Bullitt-style Ford truck of the same era would look like, and we can safely say that its styling and attitude are spot-on.

Jason Noel of Fat Fender Garage has turned the preservation of classic Ford pickups into a science (and a well-oiled business, too). FFG specializes in all things related to resurrecting classic Ford trucks, so creating a Bullitt-themed F-100 in-house was totally doable. The preliminary design process was the most important phase of this build because Jason and his team at FFG wanted just enough nostalgic touches of inspiration without taking things overboard, which can happen fast without even realizing.

The Bullitt F-100 has been treated to minimal exterior alterations, but the design cues that it does have, from the scoops on the bed sides and the full-custom hood and sharpened body lines to the reimagined grille and front bumper, are closely reminiscent of the 1968 Mustang GT portrayed onscreen. Even the dark green paint harkens back to the color of the original car. To add modern flair to the vintage truck’s restyling, FFG’s own Cerakoted door handles were utilized, as were stealthily mounted LED taillight housings. Since the truck is obviously a lot lower than factory ride height, the bed floor had to be raised. While doing that, the sheetmetal floor was converted to a one-off wood plank surface that features a motorized center section that lifts, revealing a very special vantage point.

Fat Fender Garage has teamed up with Porterbuilt Fab to produce specialized chassis systems for classic Ford pickups. The one utilized here is a Level 3 package, which allows the truck to lay frame on the concrete. Sure, it’s low, but there is no sacrificing ride quality here. Air Lift Performance air management components have been plumbed and wired into position to add user-friendly adjustability, and a rear cantilever 4-link setup helps in adapting to all road conditions. 22-inch Avant Garde wheels and Pirelli P Zero rubber contribute to the look of the F-100’s low-slung stance and overall on-road performance.

Speaking of performance, a 2017 Ford Gen 2 Coyote engine serves as the centerpiece of the Bullitt F-100’s horsepower production. Lending an assist are twin Garrett GTX35 turbos, as well as headers and an exhaust system that were fabricated in-house. All tubing within the engine bay was Cerakoted to lower thermal radiation and lend a hand in color coordination. An automatic 6R80 transmission allows for smooth sailing through the truck’s near-800 horsepower count, which has been carefully tuned to avoid the unruly tendencies of having that much muscle.

Just in case Jason feels like mashing down on the gas pedal, however, the modified 2018 Mustang GT seats have been paired with proper PRP racing harnesses to keep him firmly planted. The rest of the interior has been well-thought out by the crew at FFG to evoke a sporty, sophisticated cockpit with striking design and upholstery work, as well as the inclusion of familiar late-model amenities such as the shifter with manual shift function and the headlight control knob. Other electronic creature comforts include Dakota Digital gauges, cold-blowing A/C, and a full audio system that cranks on demand.

Steve McQueen would drive this truck. He might’ve preferred it over the ’68 Mustang GT he filmed with on set. It’s incredible to see what Jason and his crew at Fat Fender Garage can complete within their Gilbert, Arizona facility. They can accomplish just about anything for classic Ford pickups, from chassis systems and Coyote swaps to interior overhauls and full paint and body duties as well. The Bullitt F-100 is just one of FFG’s one-off concept builds, which was for sale the last we saw—just in case you’re interested in spending a fraction of the original Bullitt Mustang’s last sold comp.
If you are looking to build a truck just as unique as this, or maybe something more on the traditional side, Jason and company can help you achieve the classic Ford pickup of your dreams.
