Legacy EV has partnered with SEMA to introduce its renowned EV education program at the SEMA show in November 2023. This groundbreaking initiative marks the first time that Las Vegas show will offer an EV course, indicating the automotive aftermarket’s growing inclination to comprehend EV technology.

The one-day EV-101 session will welcome technicians and SEMA members, eager to enhance their EV knowledge. If you wish to learn more about this educational program and how to register, continue reading below and register already!

Electric Vehicles 101

This course will provide a brand-agnostic and hands-on training opportunity for automotive techs to up-skill themselves with a new understanding of electric vehicle powertrains. The one-day training will focus on the fundamental functions of EV powertrains and explore key high voltage safety practices.

Trainees who complete this course will receive an EV-101 certification from Legacy EV. Attendees will get to work with real EV powertrains and tooling on Legacy EV training benches. This EV-101 certification is a gateway to full EV certification. This entry-level certification represents approximately 10% of the required course competencies to become fully EV-certified.

The course is a one seven-hour day. It will be split into two sessions, an AM session and a PM session. Attendees will attend both morning and afternoon sessions.

Session Descriptions (AM/PM):

Morning Session: Understanding EV Anatomy and Electrical Theory 

Understanding how EVs work begins with understanding first what is inside them and then understanding the fundamentals of how they are powered. This session will provide attendees with an overview of the components that make up an EV and their functions and the electrical theory that gives them their modern performance.

In this session, attendees will know and understand:

  • What systems are needed to make a functional EV?
  • What are the functions and important specifications of EV components?
  • How can we model the behavior of electricity in a wire with water and a hose?
  • The course will focus on the following core ideas and skills that are some of the building blocks of the Certified EV Technician Framework, including:
  • Core Ideas: Electric vehicle components and systems, Ohm’s law, Watt’s law, electric circuits
  • Core Skills: Using models, mathematics, and computational thinking

Afternoon Session: Applications with EV Specifications, EV Tooling, HV Safety 

Knowing how EVs works is important, but being able to apply that knowledge is where the learning truly brings value. In this session, attendees will learn the fundamentals of high-voltage safety compliance and apply their knowledge from the morning session with HV safety best practices to work on real EV powertrains.

Technicians will delve into the inner workings of electric vehicles, gaining a comprehensive understanding of EV anatomy and electrical theory.

In this session, attendees will apply their knowledge of EVs by demonstrating:

  • How can we use EV components specifications to determine and improve vehicle performance?
  • How do I use a digital multimeter to measure voltage, current, resistance, and continuity in a HV circuit?
  • How might I arrange and wire EV components to fit an ICE vehicle and chassis?
  • How do I perform a certified HV disconnection procedure?
  • How do I verify that my system is de-energized or zero voltage verified (ZVV)?

The course will focus on the following core ideas and skills that are some of the building blocks of the certified EV technician framework:

  • Core Ideas: EV tools and equipment, zero voltage verification, block diagrams, vehicle specifications
  • Core Skills: Verifying functionality, interpreting vehicle data, vehicle design

Certification:

  • Co-Branded: Legacy EV and SEMA certification
  • EV-101: Entry-level EV industry training
  • Digital badge and physical certificate

Demonstrated Course Competencies:

At the end of the session, attendees will receive a study guide and an at-home assessment. Successful completion of this assessment will grant attendees seven hours of continuing education credits, valid toward achieving and maintaining an industry EV certification. The demonstrated course competencies will include:

  • Observe, describe, and predict the relationship between volts, ohms, and amperes in a variety of electrical circuits
  • Apply principles of Watt’s law to explain energy efficiency, mechanical power, and electrical power
  • Create a diagram of the energy transfer process that occurs in an EV
  • Identify the tools and equipment required to safety perform maintenance on electrical systems
  • Perform a manufacturer high voltage disconnect procedure and test to verify zero voltage potential in a high voltage circuit

This EV-101 certification is a gateway to full EV certification.
