Nicknames, sometimes they just don’t fit. But in the case of Marc Meadors’ “Pure Hell,” just works! Ask his West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association competition; Meadors burned ’em up this season. He made the final round of all seven races he attended, winning three straight to capture the WCOPMA 2013 Championship.

Meadors’ recent success stems from plans formulated as the result of a near tragedy. In 2010, as he sat in the staging lanes at Sacramento Raceway, a dragster preparing to make a run flew into reverse, careening into Meadors’ Pro Mod. The resulting collision broke his 8-year-old son Grant’s leg and destroyed the Camaro’s body. Thankfully, Grant’s leg healed, Meadors found new purpose and a fresh body was fitted to the unscathed Tim McAmis chassis.

Though Meadors and team had always been competitive, this experience definitely ignited a fire within them. A paint job was required for the new body and Marc had just the idea. He went to long-time family friend, Drag Racing Hall of Fame member Rich Guasco, creator/owner of one of the most famous race cars in drag racing history, the Pure Hell AA/Fuel Altered roadster, to inquire about borrowing that famous nickname. Rich was more than happy to oblige.

Working from the ’32 Bantam roadster’s paint scheme, Justin Spencer of Competition Designs successfully reimagined it to fit the drastically different Camaro shape. His finished product is definitely a head-turner.
Meadors, the president and CEO of the wildly popular Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, didn’t stop with cosmetics. Being a very hands-on owner/driver, he gathered the best parts available (see tech sheet, page 48) and built a stout new engine.

The performance mods include a screw blower and a Bruno’s/Lenco converter-equipped transmission. Bob Bunker of Bunker Race Cars updated the chassis. Bob’s a hero to West Coast Pro Mod racers, who fondly remember his Folsom Flash ’55 Chevy. Bob’s son Jason serves as the Pure Hell crew chief.
The team’s rejuvenated attitude and efforts have certainly paid off. In addition to this year’s WCMPA Championship, Meadors’ stout 5.75/252.66 stands as the nation’s sixth quickest Pro Mod performance. That figure was recorded as he won the quickest side-by-side Pro Mod race in history at NHRA’s Sonoma, California, national event. Pure Hell is also the first converter transmission-equipped car over 250 mph. He also captured the 2012 NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion Pro Mod crown.

Look for Meadors to continue to uphold the honor of his racer’s namesake as Pure Hell blazes through the competition in 2014! Marc would like to thank his wife Jessann, children Grant and Grace, his parents Gary (founder of Good Guys) and mother Marilyn for their continuing encouragement and moral support. And especially his crew: Jason Bunker, Billy” Fereira, Danny Miller, Greg Lee and…
