Dino’s Git Down: The Ultimate GM Truck Gathering!

Largest GM Show in the World!

When it comes to GM-only shows, the first one that comes to most people’s minds is Dino’s Git Down in Glendale, Arizona. Even though there are a ton of GM- or even C10-specific shows around the country, Dino and his crew put on the largest GM event and it’s technically not even a “show.” There is zero spectator fee and zero registration fee. Just show up, park, and enjoy a ton of cool trucks and vendors. No judging and no awards means a weekend of hanging out and not worrying about competing, which is why we all got into this custom truck scene to begin with.

The 2023 event was held Nov. 10-11, which as usual, is the week after SEMA and allows several of the big industry players to hang out on the West coast an additional week after SEMA and attend this event. With some of the top builds in the country attending as well as people who travel from thousands of miles away make this event one to attend.

What started as a small get together with Dino Battilana and his friends 13 years ago quickly outgrew the area around his shop and moved around the greater Phoenix area a few times over the years, each time to a larger venue to fit the ever-growing crowd. A few years ago, Dino decided to move the event to the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, which provided a ton of room for growth. This venue is already busting at the seems and this year’s event was no different with an estimated 9,000 vehicles over the two-day event. Friday is dedicated to GM trucks only, while Saturday opens the event to include GM cars as well.

The next Dino’s Git Down is scheduled for Nov. 15-16, 2024, and is once again brought to you by LMC Truck. Make plans early to check out this must-attend event and see some of the nation’s best Chevy and GMC trucks. For more info, check out DinosGitDown.com or find them on all social media platforms.

Installing Slosh Tubz Firewall Filler Panels!

Installing ’55-’59 C10 Filler Panels from Slosh Tubz

Truck owners who are knee-deep in an extensive build will no doubt find these firewall filler panels a must-have. Slosh Tubz has panel kits available for a multitude of classic Chevy truck models, including first-gen C10, which worked out great for Auto Metal Direct (AMD’s) Project Burnadebt—a ’59 Chevy Apache that was in need of a whole lot of loving.

We have already covered a number of tech projects featuring Project Burnadebt, which has come a long way from its original condition. This time around, the engine bay got some attention while the cab was separated from the frame. The original-condition firewall may be good enough to run as-is for projects that aren’t frame-off affairs, but filling the unnecessary holes and cleaning up its general unsightliness is an absolute necessity for a show-worthy truck.

Luckily, Slosh Tubz made the process of smoothing out and polishing the ’59’s factory firewall as simple and straightforward as possible. The company’s two-piece kit includes two bead-rolled sheetmetal panels that have been shaped perfectly to fit over the existing firewall; some welding and light bodywork is required to blend it in seamlessly. Extensive experience with a welder isn’t necessary, but previous experience with one, as well as a grinder, will help get the job done.

Those who are still brushing up on their skills can still make it happen, especially with a little help from the steps below. They were rolled out from start to finish thanks to the talented guys at Oliver Speed & Chassis in Cumming, Georgia.

The firewall filler panel kit from Slosh Tubz rids the firewall of all unnecessary holes and contours and will make for a much more memorable first impression when the hood is lifted.

01. Since these particular filler panels are overlays that go over the existing OE firewall, Devin started on the driver side by first shaving the surface clean of this imbedded port.

02. Devin removed the port and took down the hole to bare metal. He also shaved the other holes with protruding lips that would soon be covered by the Slosh Tube filler panels.
03. Next, Devin placed the filler panel over the area where it would be permanently welded to get an idea where he would have to trim it. He traced a line along the bottom and the side where it could be cleaned up to fit more precisely.

04. To safely and accurately make the cut along the lines, the panel was securely clamped to a table at each side. After making sure the panel wouldn’t shift when allowing pressure, Devin used a sheetmetal air shear to trim around the panel with ease.
05. Once the panel was completely trimmed, Devin gave it a good once over with a scouring pad to promote better weld adhesion once it was time.

06. To further prepare the stock firewall for installation of the filler panel, Devin then used a grind wheel to take the area down to bare metal where he planned to make his welds.
07. To clean off the dust from the grinding and leftover grease from the firewall, Devin rubbed it down with acetone to fully prep it before welding the filler panel into position.

08. Next, Devin began to spot-prime some of the bare metal areas to protect them from rust before this surface would be covered up for good.
09. The Slosh Tubz firewall filler panel for the driver side was held in place and secured with a handful of self-tapping sheetmetal screws, which will be removed and filled.
10. Next, Devin slowly began moving around the panel, spot welding it on all sides.

11. Once the tack welds and the surrounding areas of metal cooled down, Devin then started the process of fully welding in the panel.
12. After the panel was welded all the way around, the sheetmetal screws were removed and the holes were filled in with spot welds. They will later be ground down and covered up like they were never even there.
13. Here’s a closer look at the completed passenger-side firewall filler panel installed and fully prepped for primer/paint.
14. The entire firewall surface was then completely covered with primer to seal the deal on the install job. The engine bay will look so much smoother without having to look at the eyesore of the old firewall anymore. Once project Burnadebt comes together, the work on the firewall will play a huge part in its overall cleanliness. Stay tuned for the next installment.

Golden Milestone: 50 Years of the Iconic Daytona Turkey Run!

The Ultimate Automotive Get-Together for the Last Half-Century

Photos by Joe Greeves

When you do something long enough, you get really good at it. That’s especially true of car shows—specifically the fall Daytona Turkey Run, now celebrating its 50th anniversary! Held during the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, the show has developed its legendary reputation because it appeals to every level of automotive enthusiasm. The approximately 7,000 cars on display on the Daytona International Speedway infield will test your endurance to see them all. The 1,500- plus vehicles in the Car Corral makes it the biggest weekend custom-car lot on the coast offering something for every taste and budget. Follow that up with the huge gathering of more than 2,000 vendors at the Turkey Run Swap Meet, selling everything from nuts and bolts to high-performance engines and everything in between. Hundreds of food vendors positioned around the infield kept energy levels high, and those who developed a thirst made their way to the Hops & Hood tent to sample some of the best beers around.

But there’s more—lots more.  Automotive celebrities/TV personalities Bad Chad and Jolene from Bad Chad Customs were on hand along with Joe and Amanda Martin from Iron Restoration. Batman dropped off his car and motorcycle, happy to give spectators a great photo op. Scooter Time rentals made sure you could traverse the track in comfort, Mecum Auctions introduced the crowd to the automotive auction experience, and Artisan Alley had handmade crafts and fashion items for that special gift.

This year’s raffle car was a 1932 Ford Highboy roadster, built by Chassis Crafters, was equipped with a 350 Chevy V-8 350ci automatic, and a Brookville steel body. This annual raffle tradition was handled by the Daytona Beach Street Rods—hosts of the Turkey Run for the last half century. Their donations to the Volusia area charities are reaching the million dollar mark.

Want even more? Let’s not forget the afternoon door prize giveaways. Everyone pulls up a chair and waits to hear their number called for the significant gifts awarded Friday and Saturday afternoon. Automotive fun continues even when the sun goes down with Turkey Run Nites, a free outdoor car show held in front of the Daytona International Speedway. It begins on Wednesday and extends through Saturday night with music, cruisin’, food, and fun.

If you’d like to attend an event that has it all, put the fall Turkey Run on your schedule. You can also attend the spring version of this event, happening March 22-24. Remember, there are no classes or awards in either event, just a lot of fun for enthusiasts of any age. Come join your friends at this wonderful Daytona tradition.

A Journey into The Race of Gentlemen

A Race for the Ages

It was late summer, a few years back, and the CarShowSafari team was heading “down the shore” on the Garden State Parkway, toward the southernmost reaches of New Jersey. Not to frolic in the surf, nor to stroll the boardwalk chowing down on deep-fried delicacies. No, we were there to experience something larger than that: a vintage beach racing phenomenon called the Race of Gentlemen.

The Race of Gentlemen is a marvel. Unlike any automotive event I have ever attended, The Race of Gentlemen affectionately referred to as TROG, is less like driving down to Wildwood, New Jersey for a weekend of vintage fun, and more like stepping through a time portal into another world.

For so many reasons TROG is both unusual, and a car show to be imitated. It has the unique location of actually being on the beach, which sets a tone to the crash of waves – if you can hear them over the sound of vintage motorcycles, and the illustrious background of Ferris wheels, roller coasters, and the far-off New Jersey boardwalks. It almost gives one the impression of having stumbled into bike racing at Coney Island in the 1920s and 1930s.

That sensation, of course, is what they want. Great effort was put into selecting vendors, period attire was requested, and all around there were images evoking carnivals, classic foods, and the earliest days of racing.

Because that is what we’re really there for, after all. Both days of the events are chock full of vintage motorcycles and hot rod racing down the beach. Drivers are dressed in vintage-style racing gear, with rounded helmets and knee-high laced boots, their jodhpur pants bulging at their thighs. Some cars are in great shape, but others are rusted, dusty, and a whole lot of old school.

The racing is not about the winning. The racing is about the marvelous experience of these vintage beauties starting and running, and at not-unimpressive speeds either. Cars jumped the what-would-have-been-tree more times than I can count, but they ran, kicking up sand against the checkered starting line posts, revving powerful, classic engines with a great rumbling thunder to mimic the waves behind them.

The Race of Gentlemen is a visceral, sensory event. One didn’t attend the show, they experienced it, sloshing through the wet sand upon their shoes, smelling the salt sea air mixed with thirty-year-old exhaust rust coughing into the air. The revving of engines on the line seemed to reverberate through the wild, excited crowd. Hot sun baked our skin, and vintage, boozy root beer cooled our throats.

My first thought upon entering the show was something along the lines of wow, they moved the ocean a lot closer to the Bonneville Salt Flats. My second was that I had stumbled into some sepia-toned scene from the early pages, (and left out of the movie), of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas where sports journalists gather in the desert to report on motorcycle racing – kicking up dust, shooting back whiskey, speaking out stories to editors across the country on the single phone out that far from civilization as the American dream grows around them, a phoenix from its own ashes. There’s no other way to describe this show – it was cool. It was sailor tattoos and album covers and pin-up girls cool. It was hot rods, rat rods, and motorcycles with rusted-out racing numbers cool.

The Race of Gentlemen is a visceral, sensory event. One didn’t attend the show, they experienced it…

It was also incredibly inspiring. Sounds a little odd – here were are, standing beside an original Wall of Death motorcycle performance tent, watching Bettie Page-inspired Hot Rodders throwback Sailor Jerry’s rum, and I’d call that inspiring? More than inspiring… hopeful as hell. Because this show, unlike so many car shows, is not comprised of a nostalgic group of car owners, recalling the days of chrome bumpers and sock hops. This show was younger kids, millennials with young families, and young adults who never lived through the era they’re dressing as, speaking as, and driving as. They’re not remembering their own history – they’re remembering the history of the automotive hobby. And not because it’s nostalgic, but because it’s damned cool.

…racing whatever we could cobble together, not quite realizing we were changing the automotive world forever.

That’s no slight on the wonderful, classic tradition of car shows countrywide. Those shows are so important to preserving the hobby and the history. But this show didn’t feel like a glimpse of the past. It felt like we had slipped right back into the photograph, and we were standing on the Bonneville Salt Flats, wearing cuffed jeans and racing whatever we could cobble together, not quite realizing we were changing the automotive world forever.

I believe wholeheartedly that hot rod and vintage racing culture is going to be the direction of the hobby. The Race of Gentlemen brought together history, cars, and hobbyists, but it also brought the next generation of classic car lovers. It brought families, and kids – drawn by the beach, the noise, the tents. It was a family affair that has all the potential to save the very hobby we love so much. And it was damn fun.

We need more events that blow our socks off. We need more left-field madness of motorcycles on posts two stories in the air – their driver balancing on one leg as it spins around a treadmill. We need more vintage style, historical photographs, wild and unique racing – so close to your face sand gets into your eyebrows. We need all of these things to push the hobby forward, to make it bigger and grander and more likely to last for years to come. The Race of Gentlemen is just the kind of event to get us there.
