Colton Powers’ ‘95 Chevy C1500 is a Time Machine with a Cammed Twist

There is something undeniable about the mid-’90s GM truck aesthetic. If you grew up in that era, you already know the vibe. It’s the distinct click of the door handle, the specific sweep of the dashboard, the rumble of the exhaust, and that iconic, squared-off stance that defined a generation of custom truck culture. For Colton Powers, those elements weren’t just design cues; they were the background track to his childhood.

Colton and his dad, Steve, are no strangers to vintage tin. Their personal garage boasts a killer collection of steel ranging from 1953 all the way to 2005. But when it came time to build something truly definitive—something that carried the weight of a lifelong passion, Colton knew exactly which platform needed the spotlight. Enter this pristine 1995 Chevy C1500. Sporting a mere 47,000 original miles on the clock, it was the ultimate survivor and the perfect canvas for a ground-up transformation.

The mission? Simple on paper, yet incredibly complex in execution: create the ultimate “what if” scenario. Colton wanted to build exactly what a modern-day GM factory rerun of the legendary OBS (Old Body Style) platform would look like if it rolled off the assembly line right now in 2026. Timeless ’90s character on the outside; cutting-edge, high-performance execution underneath.

To turn this ambitious blueprint into reality, Colton handed the keys over to the masterful crew at MG Performance. They didn’t just build this truck; they clinically dissected it. The low-mileage C1500 was stripped completely down to its bare frame, leaving no bolt unturned and no bracket unexamined.

If you want a truck to drive like a modern performance machine, you have to throw out the old playbook. The factory solid axle and leaf springs just weren’t going to cut it for a 2026-spec build. The standout engineering marvel on this chassis is a 2013 Camaro independent rear suspension (IRS), meticulously narrowed by four inches to tuck perfectly beneath the unmodified, factory-stock bedsides. The result? A truck that doesn’t just look the part, it handles corners with the razor-sharp precision of a modern muscle car while retaining its classic proportions.

Every square inch of the undercarriage looks like a high-end concept car. The wiring is completely tucked and hidden; the plumbing is routed with surgical precision; and the re-engineered suspension gives it a modern, aggressive stance without sacrificing an ounce of ride quality.

What truly sets this Chevy apart is the restraint shown in its styling. It’s incredibly easy to over-customize a truck and lose its identity in the process. Colton and the team resisted that urge. By keeping the exterior body lines pure and original, the truck retains the undeniable nostalgia that hooked Colton as a kid.

When you slide into the cabin, you are instantly transported back to the golden era of truckin’, yet the driving dynamics tell a completely different story. It’s smoother, sharper, and infinitely more refined than anything GM could have dreamed up back in ’95. It breathes new life into old memories.

“This build isn’t just another project; it’s a bridge between the past and the future,” Colton says. “It’s the truck I grew up loving, rebuilt the way it should have been in 2026—modern comfort, timeless style, and a whole lot of heart.”

Building a truck of this caliber requires more than just a vision; it takes an elite squad of craftsmen pulling in the same direction. Colton is the first to admit that this dream wouldn’t have crossed the finish line without an incredible support system. Major credit goes out to Mathew George, Tim Mobley, Jamey Tiffany, and Eric Evans for pouring their expertise, late nights, and horsepower-infused souls into this project.
