Inside Matt Misner’s Triple-Turbo Duramax Chevy 2500HD

Triple Turbos, 1,200 RWHP, And 10-Second Time-Slips 

The story of Matt Misner’s Duramax-powered Chevy starts out like many others, with a mildly modified street truck that also saw its fair share of work duty. Soon though, the modifications came fast and furious, with the truck receiving a 7-inch lift, solid front axle and built engine. After partnering up with Fleece Performance, the truck went 11.27 at 120 mph in the quarter-mile, which Matt felt was way, way too fast for being that high up in the air. So, the transformation into what you see here began.

Absolutely no corners were cut on building the 6.6L Duramax diesel in Matt’s Chevy 2500HD. A fully built short-block, with Carrillo connecting rods, PPE 15.5:1 pistons, ARP head and main studs, and a SoCal Diesel dampener was assembled at home by Matt. The cam, valves, valve springs and retainers are also from SoCal Diesel, while upgraded pushrods are from Merchant Automotive. With copious amounts of air and fuel, the result of Matt’s efforts is a Duramax with an estimated 1,200 rear-wheel horsepower.
The triple-turbo setup in the Chevy is based upon the same 75mm turbo that the truck made 1,003 rwhp with. It’s now the high-pressure charger in the setup, and is equipped with a Fleece Performance billet compressor wheel, 96mm turbine, and 1.25 A/R exhaust housing.
Vibrant Performance supplied all of the components and piping to mount the two atmospheric chargers that make up the triple-turbo setup, but the actual fabrication was done by Fleece Performance.

Prototype Ride

At the time, Matt’s ride was a test bed for Fleece Performance, which was developing a line of billet-wheel BorgWarner-based turbochargers. The truck received a 68mm turbo, then a 71mm, and finally a 75mm charger that made 1,003 rwhp on fuel, and got Matt kicked out of the track for not having a roll bar. If the team was to continue to progress, changes had to be made, so a new frame was sourced, and everything was swapped over, except for the solid axle front suspension. Instead of lifted, the truck would now be lowered, approximately 3 inches in the front, and 4 inches in the rear. The front drop was achieved merely by cranking the torsion bars all the way out, while the rear was lowered by removing two leaves in the spring pack, and using drop shackles.

The twin 68mm Fleece Performance turbo-chargers that are the atmospheric turbos flow an immense amount of air through twin S&B air filters. The turbos are capable of 1,800 rwhp of air when maxed out, so there’s plenty of room to grow.

A big part of the reason that the truck runs like it does are the twin CP3K pumps from Fleece Performance, which provide a torrent of fuel to the engine. The second pump uses parts from ATS, PPE and HSP, and feeds a set of 100 percent over injectors.

Lowering the truck wasn’t the only modification to the suspension, however, as Rancho 9000 shocks, Cal Tracs traction bars, a PPE Center link, and Fleece Performance tie-rod sleeves were also installed on the new IFS rebuild. For the street, the rig rides on 305/50R20 Nitto 420S tires, while at the track, super-sticky 28×14.50×16 Hoosier Quick time Pros get the call. With its new lowered stance, Matt decided that it was also time to step his game way up, and go after more power once again.

To cut down on parasitic losses and help cool-downs between rounds, twin electric fans with a built-in shroud replaced the factory clutch version.
The Allison 1000 transmission has a lot of usual upgrades like a deep pan and custom converter, but is missing the billet shafts that a lot of people run. Matt credits the TCM transmission tuning from Fleece Performance for the Allison’s reliability and performance.

Power Parts

The engine is the same one that was in the truck when it was lifted, and although the block and (surprisingly) cylinder heads are stock, the rest of the Duramax is chock-full of aftermarket parts. The factory crank swings a set of Carrillo rods, and lowered-compression 15.5:1 PPE pistons. ARP fasteners are used throughout the engine, and secure the heads to the block, the rods to the crank, and the main caps to the block. SoCal Diesel also supplied parts for the build, such as one of their performance dampeners, 3388 camshaft, and valve springs and retainers. The pushrods are one of the only parts not from SoCal, and were sourced from Merchant Automotive.

If the interior looks surprisingly stock, that’s because the Chevy is still a street truck that’s driven often. While the timeslips might say race truck, the comfy Chevy Avalanche seats, Peffley Performance rollcage with swing-out door bars, and full interior make sure Matt is comfortable when cruising down the street.
Matt gets a lot of questions about his grille, which was an eBay purchase. Visible through the custom front is a third electric fan which is used in warm weather.

Lifted or lowered, Matt definitely didn’t skimp on the power-producing parts over the course of his Chevy’s construction. Exergy Engineering 100 percent over injectors were installed, along with ported fuel rails. Fleece Performance supplied twin CP3K pumps; modified Bosch units that are designed to help support fueling at more than 3,000 rpm, which were installed on the engine with parts from ATS and PPE Dual Fueler kits. For induction, the turbo setup was stepped up drastically once the truck was lowered. The billet 75mm Fleece turbo was retained, but now had twin 68mm Fleece turbos blowing into it. The triple-turbo setup was put together using piping from Vibrant Performance, and raised boost pressures considerably, from 55 psi with the single, to 85-90 psi with the triple turbos. Horsepower went up as well, by about 200 hp to the rear tires.

In addition to in-dash gauges, there’s also three ISSPRO gauges on the A-pillar, which monitor boost, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust backpressure.
Having a bed is very convenient when you need to run four separate wheels and street slicks when at the track. While street tires grip pretty well thanks to four-wheel-drive launches, the Hoosier Quick Time Pro’s allow the truck to launch even harder, and cut incredible 1.46 60- foot times.

Transmission Work

Surprisingly, the Allison 1000 holds up to an estimated 1,200 rwhp quite well. The transmission behind all this power and torque even has stock shafts, although it’s been rebuilt by Fleece Performance with Raybestos clutches, deep pan, and 2,800-rpm Sun Coast converter. Fleece also did the transmission tuning on the truck, and installed one of its Ally Lockers to control converter lockup.

For street use, the drag tires are replaced with 20×10-inch Fuel wheels, and 305/50R20 Nitto 420 tires. Matt keeps the Nittos on for all-weather use, and even runs them in the snow during winter.
Both the front and rear suspensions have been modified extensively. The front has tie-rod sleeves and an upgraded centerlink, while the rear axles has CalTracs traction bars. The truck also has Rancho 9000 shocks all around, which replaced the high-mileage stock shocks.

Results

With a substantial weight savings over the old 11-second setup, Matt’s current efforts have certainly paid off, as the Chevy has rocketed down the eighth-mile in 6.71 seconds at 109 mph. Translated to quarter-mile numbers, that’s roughly 10.30, at more than 135 mph! What’s even more impressive is that he still has never been off tune 3, a mild setup that only generates about 1,400 degrees on the EGT gauge during a pass. With two more performance levels to go, we can definitely say that the competition better watch out when they see Matt’s crazy-quick street truck in the other lane. UDBG

Exhaust comes out of the twin atmospheric turbos and into a 5-inch downpipe, which continues under the truck. At the bed, the exhaust then turns up into a black 7-inch stack from Pypes.
Right above the Bushwacker fender flares are ghost flames, which were painted on the truck by Matt’s buddy Trent Miller.
With a truck this nice, safety is a priority, as a swinging out-of-control driveshaft can wreck a lot of parts. So this safety cage was fabricated to keep it contained in case of failure. The 3.73 geared rearend was also equipped with a Yukon Grizzly locker, to ensure both rear tires always get optimal traction.
The twin ram-air hood visually sets the 2005 Chevy apart from other GMs. The hood is from Goodmark, and was paint-matched to the truck, and then flames were added.
