How a Rare Case Spirit of ’76 Found Its Way Home to Van Wychen Farms

When it comes to Case tractors, there are few that are as easy to recognize as the iconic Spirit of ‘76. This patriotic beauty is dressed to impress, sporting an iconic red, white, and blue color scheme. This, paired with the orange Case frame, makes these tractors unmistakable when you see them, but over the years the true story of what makes these tractors so incredible may have been lost. We aim to tell that story.

1976 Tractor

Our journey starts on an unseasonably warm late February morning. As I pulled into the driveway of Van Wychen Farms, the beautiful Case tractor was sitting in the driveway. Nick, co-owner of the farm alongside his brother Matt, met me in the yard, where we exchanged a few words about the weather, the corn market, and, of course, the tractor. It’s at this point that Nick tells me the history of the tractor. Nick is a 3rd-generation farmer, and his father and uncle had bought a tractor just like it in the late 70s. While the tractor in front of us wasn’t the original tractor the family farm had purchased, when this one came up for sale in the early 2010s, Nick knew he had to have it.

What makes the Spirit of ‘76 tractors so iconic, though, is that they were never actually meant to be sold. Produced in 1976 on the 200th anniversary of the United States of America, Case celebrated the bicentennial the best way they knew how—by outfitting a tractor in Stars and Stripes. What started as a normal Case 1570, the Spirit of ‘76 was dressed to impress in its Star-Spangled livery.

It’s rumored that between 200 and 300 of these tractors were produced, making them a pretty rare bird on their own. In 1976, Case would allot each dealership ONE Spirit of ‘76 tractor for order. I read in some publications that these tractors were meant only for display purposes, intended to be demo machines showcasing the power of the Case tractors against some of their other counterparts at the time.

While the history of this particular tractor may be unknown, the story of the Spirit of ‘76 is a captivating one. It dates back to a time when American agriculture thrived, small family farms were the norm, and equipment was smaller. As for this one, it will continue to live out its life on pasture here at Van Wychen Farms, where it still sees a little field work every spring by means of a land roller. A fitting retirement for a tractor that embodies the heart of rural America.
