Back at the end of the last century, status cars in the US looked quite certain. These were long luxury sedans such as the Cadillac DeVille, Lincoln Town Car, Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series. It was these machines that were associated with politicians, successful lawyers, business owners, and corporate executives.
The sedan has been a visual symbol of classic success for decades; its status was not based on aggression or showmanship. The car’s main features are sophistication and elegance. The low silhouette, strict body line and long base conveyed a restrained confidence. In American culture, sedans have long been associated with executive travel. It was such cars that drove to the entrances of expensive hotels, met passengers at airports and accompanied business trips. But since the 2000s, things have been changing dramatically.
This change was not just about changing fashion. It is about something else: people’s perception of comfort and status. Modern premium car buyers see prestige differently. It is now increasingly expressed through scale, space, and visual dominance.
It was SUVs that offered benefits that no sedan could offer:
These are just some of the features that have enabled models like the Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon XL and Lincoln Navigator to become a vehicle of choice for not only transportation but as a symbol of power and prestige.
For these and other reasons, full-size SUVs are now found in the parking lots at business districts and around airports offering professional private car service and have become the vehicle of choice for the executive.
If there is a car in this world that perfectly symbolizes changes in the culture and preferences of motorists, it is the Cadillac Escalade. This full-size off-roader has done something that rarely happens to vehicles. The car has gone beyond its transport functions, becoming a real phenomenon and an integral part of mass culture.
There are a few obvious reasons for the success of the Cadillac Escalade:
The Cadillac Escalade has rightly become a symbol of the new American luxury. Yes, it may now be less formal, but much more visible.
One of the key reasons for the SUV’s victory was a shift in comfort requirements.
Today, not only the appearance of a car is important, but also the quality of passenger experience. This is especially noticeable in the segment of corporate travel. Passengers were expecting much more:
Full-size SUVs do all of this simultaneously. For example, the rear row of a Range Rover or Chevrolet Suburban often provides more comfort than many luxury saloon sedans.
The foot space, the high roof and the ability to move freely inside the salon change the logic of travel. This is especially important for travel from the airport, between business meetings or to major events.
