Planning a car and truck show is a big job. It’s bigger than most people think. You have to find a venue that fits your needs, find a date that doesn’t overlap other shows in the area for your main demographic, line up vendors and sponsors, and most importantly, promote it for the whole year leading up to the show date. While that is all completely doable, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans for your event. Most of the time, shows are rain or shine, and the weather can affect the numbers good or bad, but sometimes it’s more than the day of weather that’s important.
For the show promoters of Showdown in the Valley 2024 in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, the last year had been jam-packed with online promotion, passing out flyers at shows all over the East Coast and making plans for the weekend to be a blast. A week before the planned event, Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on most of western North Carolina. No one had power, water, internet or even cell phone service. Trees covered most of the roads in the area while several roads had just washed away. There were even some towns that were completely washed away and had the area looking like a war zone with houses and buildings gone. With such a disaster, there was no way they could still hold this event. The reason was not only due to the damage, but also due to the locals scrambling to find missing loved ones and trying to figure out how to get life back to normal.
Knowing there was a ton of work put into making this show happen the first week of October 2024, they couldn’t just cancel it. After some back and forth with show sponsors, the venue, and the staff, they decided to postpone the show seven weeks and give the local area a little time to recoup. They also decided that the best thing to do is to turn the show into a 100% charity show and give the proceeds back locally to those who lost everything. They decided to move the show to Nov. 22-24 and were able to keep the same venue. Sure, not everyone who had planned to attend the original date could make it, but the new date worked better for other people.
With this new date, the cold weather had plenty of time to set in, and man was it cold! There was even a thin layer of snow all over town Friday morning, which led to some cool videos and photos. The show had fire pits set up all over the grounds that made for a fun atmosphere. People huddled around the fires throughout the weekend taking photos with each other, all while being surrounded by custom vehicles. The staff did a huge auction with tons of big-ticket items like wheels and tires from some of the industry’s top companies, all to raise even more money for those affected by the hurricane.
Even with the less-than-perfect situations that affected this show, they still made the best of it and raised a ton of money for a lot of people locally. This is a show you don’t want to miss in 2025, so head over to www.showdowninthevalley.com and follow them on social media to keep up with the new show info.
