In 2019, the founder of Terra Crew, James Holguin, had an idea. What if we created an event that catered to multiple genres of car culture but at a grassroots level? We could call it SPEED METAL. I simply replied, “I love it; let’s get to work.” 6 years later, we have just accomplished our 3rd successful year of Speed Metal and have even grown it to include two days of action instead of one.

When James and I were spitballing this idea, we came to the conclusion that our BIG goal with Speed Metal would be that it would be a multiple-day event encompassing off-road driving, moto riding, rally driving, and drifting while having a small concert every night featuring some of our favorite bands from different genres, much like the action sports part of the event. It would be similar to other events such as GridLife but with the prerunner culture at the core of the event’s vibe. OUR event would satisfy our market but bring in people and vehicles from other factions of car culture.

We’re in year 3 now of Speed Metal, and we have been trying our best to make this event all it can be with the resources we have at hand. This year, we added on a second day exclusively for Moto, SXSs, and the BEEHIVE 1450 series, which was a total blast to watch. There were 10-15 trucks on the course at once, all fighting for those top spots to get into the next heat and finish in the final. Our moto guys and gals had an open track all morning and were loving the desert course and the thrash track short course. We had a lower-than-expected SXS crowd this year, but those who participated told us it was the most fun they have ever had in their car. Friday night we had our first annual Drift Rave, and it was a blast. DJ, lights, and a wet course lined with neon lights and flashing strobes made the whole vibe feel like a scene from Tokyo Drift.

Coming into Saturday, our main day of the event, everyone was prepped and ready to take to the courses. After our mandatory safety meeting, all of our participants and drivers got to their positions and went for it. For our off-road desert course and thrash track, we had multiple classes of vehicles running throughout the day. These include Sketchy Dudes (no cage class), Baja Buggy Dorks (Baja bug and open wheel class), Brorunner (leaf spring class), and Wannabe TT (unlimited truck class). These classes took turns on the course throughout the day and thoroughly entertained our crowd of 3000+ people! At the other end of the venue, we had our drift course running all day with various entry comps and drift comps to keep the drivers motivated and running. In between all of the action was our vendor row, where you could find vendors from every aspect of the off-road market along with some apparel shops and other brands. Our food court was full of good eats and desserts, and we also had a DJ entertaining the crowd throughout the day.

All in all, it was another great event that we worked very hard to put on. The whole weekend all I saw were smiling faces and happy participants. This event is held close to our hearts over here at Terra Crew, and we strive each year to make it bigger and better than years past. We hope that you will join us next year for this one-of-a-kind, grassroots event that will make you want to attend every Terra event in the future.
