Only the Strong Survive
WOW! How do you describe the recently contested March Meet? Nearly 60 nitro burners (combined F/C, T/F and Fuel Altered turnout) filling the air with their wonderfully acrid exhaust fumes; race cars acting more like pool balls, bouncing off one another and side cushions (aka guard walls) and onto their lids; racing from daybreak to w-a-y into the night—it was a barn burner.
In a battle between #2 and #1 qualifiers, Kris Krabill scored Meet Low ET and Top Speed on his way to dispatch 2015 March Meet and Heritage Series champ Steven Densham for the T/F victory. Krabill recorded a 5.58/256.94 charge to Densham’s game 5.64/254.57.At the T/F finals, Rick Williamson, driving for Mike and Kathy Craig, dispatched Adam Sorokin 5.57/245.22 to wheelstanding 6.70/170.45. Sorokin, last year’s champ, went skyward on nearly every pass, obviously killing performance.
And Mother Nature? For many months Central California had been drier than popcorn-induced flatulence; then the fickle wench chooses race week to bring much needed—but hey, couldn’t she have held off a couple days—rain. Not enough to pull the plug, but just enough to screw the race schedule all to hell.
In spite of all the obstacles thrown in their way, track operators John and Blake Bowser and crew persevered to once again put on a “twice your money’s worth” event. We can hardly wait to see what transpires next March Meet.
At the T/F finals, Rick Williamson, driving for Mike and Kathy Craig, dispatched Adam Sorokin 5.57/245.22 to wheelstanding 6.70/170.45. Sorokin, last year’s champ, went skyward on nearly every pass, obviously killing performance. The Fuel Altered class continues to build steam: 18 entries battled for the eight-spot field. Roger Lechtenberg defeated last year’s champ, Dan Hix, 6.09/209.33 to 6.13/202.24.
And the March Meet champs are: Kris Krabill (Funny Car), Rick Williamson (Top Fuel), Roger Lechtenburg (Fuel Altered), Drew Austin (A/Fuel), Brad Woodward (Jr. Fuel), Howard Anderson (AA/GS) repeat winner, Jerry Jahnsen Jr. (A/G), Roy Castagnetto (B/G), Jim Finn (C/G), Ed Carey (D/G), Errol Sharron (7.0 Pro), Brandon Seraphine (NE-1), Charlie See (NE-2), Ed DeSaute (NE-3) and repeat winner NS Kurt Kaemerle (Hot Rod). Michael Beebe (driving) turned his back on a promising college football coaching career to return to California and race with his dad, the legendary nitro tuner Tim Beebe, who’s guiding him into the beams.Tony Bartone proved once again even the heaviest of hitters strike out. Sporting a new Murf McKinney ride, he bowed out in the semis. The Jr. Fuel title fell to Brad Woodward when opponent Alan Hull red-bulbed.Errol Sharron carded an onthe-mark 7.00/169.89 to defeat a too quick (6.92/195.34) Mike Peck, to claim the 7.0 Pro championship.Jerry Jahnsen Jr., piloting his unGasser-like Camaro, took the A/G crown from Frank Merenda, 7.60/179.56 to 7.65/156.86.The B/G champ was Roy Castagnetto who defeated Val Miller 8.60/147.37 to an (ouch!) 8.59/158.45.Jim “Woody” Wood’s ’63 roadster makes Corvette purists fall to their knees in horror, but what a neat ride!“Bad to the bone” best describes Jim Rutherford’s ’49 Ford Gasser.Featuring a metal-flake paint job so flashy it would make a bass boat blush, Tod Barker dragged his period-correct Anglia Gasser all the way from Oklahoma. Check out the wheels and red Plexi windows.Chris Morel and his beautiful nitro ’Cuda put on a performance worthy of Joie Chitwood. Fortunately, Chris fared much better than his ride. With Cory Lee driving and Ronnie Swearingen tuning, Don Nelson’s California Charger made a strong showing, qualifying fourth.Ward Howard’s Willys Gasser is cuter than a basket of speckled pups.
